Cleveland utilizes his talents as a special teams member

If you've been following Georgia
football this season and think
you’ve seen number 37 every
where, you probably have.
At various junctions throughout
his senior year, Cleveland has
played at strong safety, kick re
turner and as a defensive special
teams member.
What do the coaches think of
Cleveland and his ability to play so
many positions?
“He’s a helluva football player,”
running back coach Willie Mc
Clendon said. “He has football
smarts and plays on instinct.”
Cleveland’s versatility has never
been more important than it has
been this year. He started off the
year listed as the No. 1 tailback de
spite being slowed by a knee ir\jury
in spring practice. However, he
tore ligaments in his right thumb
just before the first game of the
season. As a result, he had to wear
a cast that prevented him from car
rying the ball.
He was then moved to special
teams where he made seven solo
tackles as well as making four
tackles from the strong safety posi
tion.
“I asked to help on special
teams,” he said. “I hate to be on the
sidelines. I kill the grass walking
back and forth.”
When Georgia and Georgia Tech
tangle Saturday at Sanford Sta
dium (12:30, WTBS), Cleveland
will get a chance to carry the ball
again from the fullback position
due to a bruised knee injury to No.
3 fullback Jason Hamil.
Cleveland started in every game
for the Dogs in 1989 as a fullback
where he averaged 3.6 yards per
carry and 10.8 yards per catch. He
will also remain on special teams
as well as playing back up at
strong safety.
“I’m just happy to be back over
there (at fullback),” Cleveland
said. “I’ve always liked special
teams because I like to hit people,
but there isn’t as much pressure
(on offense) and I feel more re
laxed. I looked to see where I could
contribute to the team.”
His teammates recognized
Cleveland’s committment to the
team when they recently voted him
the permanent team captain for
this season.
“I think it is a compliment to
him and to the type of person he
is,” Georgia coach Ray Goff said.
Cleveland was a star player for
West Orange Stark High School in
Orange, Texas where as a senior,
he averaged 5.8 yards per carry
and 16 catches for 260 yards. The
26th-best prospect in the nation, as
ranked by the Atlanta Journal-
Constitution, chose to play for
Georgia because he liked the tradi
tion and atmosphere.
In 1988, he played both fullback
and tailback, where he averaged
3.5 yards a carry as well as seeing
action on special teams.
The 1989 season saw Cleveland
averaging 18.9 yards returning
kickoffs along with anchoring the
fullback post.
He also threw a 30-yard half
back touchdown pass to Arthur
Marshall against South Carolina.
With his career as a Bulldog
coming to an end, Cleveland wants
to get his degree in Criminal Jus
tice and possibly work for the FBI.
“When I first got here, one of my
goals was to get a chance to play in
the NFL,” he said.
“But when I saw the great run
ning backs when I got here, my
scope narrowed to school and aca
demics. It’d be nice to play in the
NFL, but my body’s worn. I’ve been
playing for a long time.”

the Bulldogs would win by 13
points (Georgia’s 101.98 rating
minus Tech’s 88.52 rating, with no
home court point values given be
cause the game is played on a neu
tral court).
“If Georgia runs up the score
against Tech it will mean some
thing,” Sagarin said.
Sagarin, who received a math
ematics degree mathematics at the
Massachusetts Insitute of Tech
nology in 1971, began his rankings
in 1971 because of his love for num
bers and sports. His rankings were
first published in The Boston Globe
in 1974, and in USA Today in 1985.
His collegiate football rankings
are also published in USA Today
on Tuesdays. According to his for
mula, Georgia Tech will beat
Georgia between the hedges Sat
urday by 17 points.
In past years, Sagarin’s poll has
been amazingly accurate.
In 1981, Sagarin had Indiana
ranked No. 1 going into the NCAA
Basketball Tournament, while
other polls ranked the Hooeiers at
the bottom half of the Top 10. In
Sagarin’s rankings, the top teams
in each region were Indiana, North
Carolina (No. 2 by Sagarin), Vir
ginia (No. 4) and Louisiana Suite
(No. 6). All four teams reached the
Final Four, and Indiana defeated
North Carolina for the title.
Since then, he has predicted
three of four Final Four teams
many times.
Georgia coach Hugh Durham
said, “It might be the first time in
the history of the University of
Georgia that a team is ranked No.
1 in basketball. Let’s hope that at
the end of the year, we’re still up
there somewhere.”
Tonight’s game against Arm
strong State in the Coliseum (7:30
p.m.) won’t be computed in Saga
rin’s rankings because Division II
teams aren’t computed.
