Bulldog used to role change
By ERIK SCHMIDT
Sports Wnter
When seeking versatility on the
Bulldog gridders, look no further
than red-shirt freshman Chad
Wilson.
Wilson was initially signed by
Georgia as a quarterback, the posi
tion at which he starred for Wayne
County High School in Jesup, Ga.,
but since then has been moved to
defensive back, wide receiver and
kick returner.
"Chad was no doubt one of the
most dominant quarterbacks in the
area,” Wilson’s high school coach
Mike Dean said."He was a great
rushing quarterback.”
During his senior year, Wilson
was named the 27th best prospect
in the state by the Atlanta Journal-
Constitution as well as All-Region
Coastal Area by the Savannah
News-Press.
His finest single-game perfor
mance in high school came against
Appling County, who at the time
was undefeated and ranked fourth
in the state.
“He rushed for over 200 yards,”
Dean said. “He scored three times
from over 60 yards out”
Wilson rushed for 1,025 yards on
110 carries as a senior and passed
for 420 yards. His high school’s
backfield also contained two 1,000-
yard rushers.
Upon his arrival in Athens,
Wilson was slated as the number
three quarterback behind Greg
Talley and Preston Jones.
“From what (the coaches) first
told me, they wanted me to try out
for quarterback,” Wilson said.
This year, Joe (Dupree) came in
and took the job. He s a great ath
lete. The coaches still wanted to
play me somewhere though.”
And hence the transition began.
Wilson was placed at defensive
back for a few weeks this season
until injuries began to plague the
wide receiving corps.
They switched me to receiver
because they needed help there,”
he said.
Although he hasn’t caught a
pass this season, Wilson still en
joys the position.
*1 like it there,” he said. “It may
not be as exciting as quarterback,
but I can still get the ball.”
“For a while at quarterback, I
was sitting in the third spot behind
Greg and Preston,” he added. "I
wasn’t really playing. I told the
coaches that at any point Fd be
ready to move. Now I’m getting to
play.”
Wilson feels his biggest attribute
as a receiver is his speed, and after
running a 4.43 40-yard dash over
the summer, the point is not debat
able.
“My speed is my biggest
strength,” he said. “Catching
passes was the hardest part (of
learning the position) but Coach
(Bob)Harrison has been helping
me work on my catching.”
Wilson has also impressed his
fellow receivers.
“He’s got the speed, definitely,”
wide receiver Kevin Maxwell said.
The thing I like about Chad is he’s
a quick learner. He’s picking up the
ins and outs of the position. He’s
coming along real well.”
The upperclassmen (receivers)
have helped me a lot,” Wilson said.
They’re not stingy in any respect
of the word. They want to help me
out in every aspect"
Wilson’s primary fame this
season has come from kick-off re
turns. In his 10 games at the posi
tion, Wilson has outgained every
other Georgia return man (403
yards) including freshman speed
ster Andre Hastings (371 yards).
