End draws near for seniors
Mo Lewis: Senior happy with experience at Georgia.
By LYA WODRASKA

When the Georgia football team
takes the field Saturday, most of
the players will be thinking of the
game with Georgia Tech as the last
game of the season, but 13 seniors
will be thinking of the meeting as
their last time to play between the
hedges.
This year’s seniors could end
their careers with a 4-7 record,
Georgia’s worst mark since 1961
when the team went 3-7. A losing
season is hard for any player to
take, but the seniors won’t get an
other chance to leave with a win
ning record.
Some players might be bitter
about not going out with a winning
record, but outside linebacker Mo
Lewis isn’t
“I’ve accomplished a lot here," he
said. “I’ve been to three bowl
games, won two and lost one. You
can’t ask for anything more than
that from a school."
Georgia couldn’t ask anything
more from the 6-4, 241 pounder ei
ther. Lewis has been a nightmare
for opposing teams’ offenses as he
Senior Alphonso Ellis
has racked up 164 solo tackles, 139
assists, and 14 sacks during his ca
reer as a Bulldog.
Fellow outside linebacker
Bryant Gantt has also had a suc
cessful career at Georgia. After
spending most of his time playing
back-up for Norman Cowins, this
year Gantt has been very produc
tive, making 24 solo tackles and 20
assists.
Georgia outside linebacker
coach Dicky Clark said both Lewis
and Gantt have set good examples
for the rest of the young defense.
“They’ve both been great players
for us,” he said. They work hard in
school and show good leadership.
We’ve been pleased with both of
them.”
While the defense has been bol
stered by Lewis and Gantt, Al
phonso Ellis, Sean Hummings, and
Chris Broom have been vital to the
Dogs’ ofTense.
During his career at fullback,
Ellis has carried the ball 108 times
for 522 yards as well as making
two tackles for the special teams
unit this year.
Ellis’ only regret as a Bulldog is
not winning a national
championship.
“When I came to Georgia, I had
every intention of winning a na
tional championship but unfortu
nately we weren’t able to do that,”
he said. “I have good hopes for
Georgia in the future and I’m going
to be very supportive of them.”
Hummings has made his own
mark as r. split end. During his ca
reer as a receiver, he has caught 56
passes for 885 yards. This season
he is averaging 15.3 yards per
catch.
Hummings said he is disap
pointed that Georgia did not ao
well this year, but he is looking for
ward to the game with the Yellow
Jackets.
Tech is a chance for me to go out
as a winner," Hummings said.
The tight end position has been
anchored by Broom, a native of Six
Mile, South Carolina. Broom, who
has caught 11 passes for 142 yards
this year, hopes to stay in Athens
after he graduates.
This might end up being my
home forever,” he said. “I’ve really
come to love Athens. I want to get
into coaching somewhere around
here after I get my degree.”
Place kicker John Kasay con
tinued the Bulldogs’ tradition of
great kickers. He has been a vital
part of Georgia’s scoring offense
this year as he leads the team in
scoring with 58 points from nailing
16 of 21 field goal attempts. Kasay,
who has been ranked in the top 10
nationally in field goals all season,
was recently named to the 1990
All-America Third Team by Foot
ball News for his efforts.
Brian Cleveland has been one of
Georgia’s most versatile players.
During his career, the Orange,
Texas, native has played at full
back, tailback, and defensive back,
as well as on special teams.
The remaining seniors that will
be playing their last game include,
offensive guard William Wynn,
who has provided leadership as
well as talent for the Bulldogs, cor-
nerback Eddie Andrews, place-
kicker Brian Bowers, strong safety
Donnie Collins, Sean Stentson, and
Ricky Turner.
