‘Dancing With Wolves’ a historic epic
By NOEL MURRAY
Entertainment Writer
Every so often a movie is made
that causes the viewer to ques
tion his values and his sense of
history. “Dances With Wolves” is
just such a movie.
Kevin Costner directed and
stars in this expansive epic about
Lieutenant John Dunbar, a man
who finds himself stranded on
the frontier ar.d becomes inte
grated into the Sioux Indian cul
ture.
His absolute absorption of
their way of life and rejection of
his own makes for a gripping and
poignant cinematic experience.
The first fifteen minutes alone
are a marvel. Dunbar awakes in
a medical tent after a bloody Civil
War battle, and he has learned
that his leg will not have to be
amputated. In a fit of suicidal
madness he steals a horse and
rides directly in front of enemy
lines.
He chooses to head out to the
frontier "before the frontier is
gone,” and he encounters an off-
MOVIE REVIEW
beat colonel who sends Dunbar
out to the farthest outpost of the
U.S. Army. He is driven there by
a blabbering mule driver who ex
cels at behaving in the most an
noying ways.
Dunbar finds his post inexpli
cably deserted but decides to stay
anyway and at that point the
movie settles into its leisurely
discovery of the Sioux nation’s
beauty.
Those first sequences, though,
establish an unsettling insanity
and isolation in the white man’s
world that heightens the tension
when the white men return.
For a first-time director to
begin his movie in such a difli-
cult-to-grasp way takes a confi
dence that lingers throughout the
film.
The arc of Dunbar’s
relationship with the Sioux is
handled gracefully and as realis
tically as possible. One criticism
that has been leveled at the film
is one that is often leveled at
films about white men and op
pressed people.
Why do we need the white man
in the story? Wouldn’t it be
equally tragic and engaging with
just the Indians?
The answer is yes, but a lot
less people would go to see it. And
unlike a “Cry Freedom” or “Mis
sissippi Burning,” where the
sympathetic white man is re
vered, “Dances With Wolves”
spends a great deal of time
sculpting the characters of the
various Sioux.
In doing so, it presents the
richest portrait of native Amer
ican life since “Powwow
Highway” or “Little Big Man.”
This film has a lot in common
with “Little Big Man,” but it
avoids the parody that threat
ened to sink that film. Rather, it
deals with the emotions of a
doomed people honestly, without
sinking into melodrama.
I say the film is an honest one,
but in fact it fails on one point —
one that is a recurring problem in
American cinema. The U.S. Army
is portrayed as a group of igno
rant, leering racists which, in till
fairness, it probably was in 1863.
Still, there is a tendency there
to blame American injustices on
a motley collection of obvious bad
guys. It would have been far
more enlightening to see a more
understated take on the soldiers.
After all, nice people exploited
the Indians, too.
This is an obscure point, and
one that takes a lot more ex
plaining than I have space for
here. No matter, “Dances With
Wolves” excels despite this slight
weakness.
The acting, particularly among
the native American community,
is top-flight. Costner curves from
desperate loneliness to ecstatic
peace with a stunning sublety,
and his occasional pieces of nar
ration relate the more alienating
aspects of the story to the audi
ence graciously.
“Dances With Wolves” is a
must-see, a piece of revisionist
history that is elegant, enter
taining and essential.
