Legendary Clark at 40 Watt
By BEVERLY COX
Entertainment Writer
Legendary country songwriter
and musician Guy Clark will be
playing tonight at the 40 Watt
Club.
Members of today’s MTV satu
rated generation may not have
heard of Guy Clark, but he is one
performer who has had an impor
tant effect on modern music.
Performers such as Michelle
Shocked, Nanci Griffith, Lyle
Lovett and Timbuk Three have
named Clark as one of their major
influences. Several of his songs
have been covered by the likes of
Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings,
Tammy Wynette and a host of
others.
“It’s flattering as hell. It’s nice to
have your work appreciated and I
enjoy it because songwriting is
what I do for a living,” said Clark.
His first album, “Old Number
One,” was released by RCA in
1975. His most recent album,
1989’s “Old Friends," was nomi
nated for a Grammy and two songs
from the album became number
one country hits for other artists.
Clark grew up in Texas and
started playing guitar at the age of
17. He began writing his own songs
when he was 25.
“I’ve been in the business for
about 20 years,” Clark said. “I
started doing it because I love it.”
‘There was no magic point
where I broke into the business.
I’m still breaking into it. Song
writing is something you never get
to the end of. The more you learn,
the less you know,” Clark said.
Clark said the subject matter of
his songs is drawn from his per
sonal experiences.
It’s what I chose to
devote my life to. I
chose to devote my life
to something that is
creative and
unattainable. You
never get to write the
perfect song.
-Guy Clark
musician
"Every writer knows that you
have to write what you know
about,” Clark said. ‘The truth is of
tentimes stranger than fiction.
There’s a certain amount of poetic
license that you have to take, but if
you can’t draw from personal expe
rience, it all sounds like b.s.”
Clark said that although he is
viewed primarily as a country
artist, he doesn’t limit himself to
that genre alone.
“Sometimes it’s country, some
times it’s blues, or whatever the
mood is that suits the experience,”
Clark said. “I get to have my
choice; that’s the charm of it.”
The charm of songwriting is
something that Clark knows well.
“It’s what I chose to devote my
life to,” Clark said. “I chose to de
vote my life to something that is
creative and unattainable. You
never get to write the perfect
song.
“I get to do this until the day I
die. I’m never done. Ill never get to
be the best there is - no one does,”
he said.
Clark is currently playing dates
in Georgia, South Carolina, Cali
fornia and Massachusetts.
“I plav when I feel like it. It’s like
my whole life is a tour,” Clark said.
“I write songs then I play them for
the folks. They’re symbiotic; I can’t
do one without doing the other.”
Guy Clark will be performing at the
40 Watt tonight. Tickets are $8 and
on sale at the 40 Watt and Big Shot
Records. Clark will be joined by
guitarist Thompson Verlon, a new
artist on Capitol Records.

Mission U.K.’s back with leftovers
Too bad tracks are a mission to listen to
By GORDON PHILLPS
Contributing Writer
Mission U.K.: “Grains of Sand”
(Mercury/Polygram)
When a well-known U.K. band
issues a record of songs that, for
one reason or another, didn’t
make it on their previous album,
one has to worry. When the songs
are as stylistically tedious as
these happen to be, worrying
doesn’t seem to do any good.
‘‘Grains of Sand,” The Mission
U.K.’s “new album” is a collection
of cuts from their “Carved in
Sand” recording sessions.
There is no marked change in
the style of this album from that
of their previous efforts. Unfortu
nately, the previous problems are
back as well with magnified per
sistence.
The main problem they can’t
seem to shake is the smothering
voice of Wayne Hussey, the Mis
sion’s lead vocalist. Even with
the stylistic variations of the
music, Hussey’s voice remains
unchanged for the most part.
Occasionally it seems the
music might break free from the
weight of his voice, however, on
most of the tracks, the volume
with which his vocals are repro
duced engulf the more inter
esting instruments.
With a more talented vocalist
and less inane lyrics, this would
work well. Unfortunately in this
case, it works against the music
■ ALBUM REVIEW
Mission U.K.'s back with tracks
as a whole.
While many of the tracks are
something near laborious to
listen to, there are several that
are agreeable enough to deserve
mention.
“Hands Across the Ocean” and
“Mr. Pleasant” are actually both
quite listenable -- either down
playing Hussey’s vocals or uti
lizing his better capability of
singing quick-paced carnival
music.
Two other tracks, “Bird of Pas
sage” and “Butterfly On A
Wheel,” showcase the band’s
softer, more acoustic side. The
latter creates a strongly melodic.
acoustic atmosphere and does
wonders with it.
Sadly, the very next trnck,
“Love,” takes the same basic-
melody. It adds pretentious,
overtly simple lyrics and elimi
nates any conviction one may
have that the band has a
strength in acoustics.
In essence, what the Mission
U.K. has created is a semi-listen-
able collection of leftovers. They
are stylistically varied yet com
pletely unsatisfying.
The album has a nice overall
sound but goes nowhere with it.
It is irritating to listen to and ul
timately boring.

"DINE AND DASH" DOES NOT PAY:
AN OPEN LETTER TO UGA STUDENTS
Many people think "Dine and Dash" is a fun prank. We
found out the hard way that it's a CRIME. It has cost us
several hundreds of dollars already and might cost us future
career opportunities.
Our victim prosecutes. In fact, MOST RESTAURANTS
AND BARS PROSECUTE.
You may say, "So what!" Well, here's what our prank
has COST EACH of us so far:
Several hours in the Clarke County Jail;
$50.00 to a bondsman;
$350.00 to an attorney;
Anxiety and embarrassment; and
Hassling with court appearances.
We haven't been before the Judge for sentencing yet. We
could still be SENTENCED to up to a YEAR IN JAII. and
a $1,000.00 FINE, plus court costs.
Additionally, the STUDENT JUDICIARY is concerned
with these types of incidents. An adjudication there could
result in SUSPENSION or even EXPULSION from
school.
When we fill out the next job application, how are we
going to explain CONVICTION OF CRIME: THEFT
OF SERVICES? Beyond the immediate costs listed above,
we may lose future career opportunities. We may never
erase this mark.
By the way, do you know why you have the hassle of
leaving a credit card with the waitress when you run a tab?
That's right; because a few people steal from restaurants
and bars, everyone is affected.
We know you think you'll never get caught. So did we.
