Rodis bids farewell
after her last meet
By LYA WODRASKA
Sports Editor
Whether it’s to the strains of
Janet Jackson or Paula Abdul,
G«orgia gymnast Chris Rodis has
entertained gymnastic fans over
her four years with some of the
most exciting routines ever. But
all of that will end soon as No. 2
Georgia hosts No. 4 Alabama in
Rodis’ final home meet Saturday
at 7:30 p.m.
Tm never emotional until I’m
right into the heart of some
thing," the senior said, who
scored her sixth 9.9 of the season
in Georgia’s 195.10-189.85 win
over Auburn Wednesday.
For someone who didn’t decide
to come to Georgia until three
weeks before the Fall quarter of
her freshman year, Rodis has
proven to be one of Georgia’s best
gymnasts. As a freshman, the
Fullerton, Calif., native was
named an All-American on vault,
in 1990 an All-American on the
uneven bars, and in 1991 an All-
American on floor.
"It was a spur of the moment
thing,” Rodis said of her last
minute decision to come to
Georgia. “I made a decision that
would change my whole life in
the matter of a day. My parents
were pretty shocked.”
Rodis is currently the nation’s
second-best floor worker, even
though her routines aren’t as dif
ficult as some of her teammates’.
Barring an injury or fall at the
national championships in April,
Rodis is a likely to capture a
fourth All-American title.
Chris Rodis
“I’d like to have my face plas
tered up there on the wall once
more,” Rodis said, who did back
flips for beads down Bourbon
Street in New Orleans during
Mardi Gras.
Rodis makes up for the lack
of difficulty in her artistry. Her
dancing is something that is of
ten seen more on club dance
floors than in gym meets.
But then again Rodis’ person
ality is too spontaneous for her to
stay within the normal guide
lines.
“I want people to remember
me,” Rodis said laughing.
Rodis said that she wants to
return to California after she
graduates in the Spring because
it’s not as conservative as Athens.
“No one stops to think twice
about who you are or what you’re
doing in Loo Angeles,” Rodis said.
Track heads to NCAA indoor tourney
By THOMAS HARP
Staff Writer
The UGA track team travels
this weekend to Indianapolis,
Indiana to compete in the NCAA
Indoor Championships. For track
members to be allowed to compete
in the championship, they have to
meet certain requirements in
their event. If they meet these
standards, they automatically
qualify.
If an athlete does not automat
ically qualify, he can still compete
by provisionally qualifying. To
provisionally qualify, he must
meet a standard that is below
those of automatic qualifiers. He
then has a chance to get picked for
the competition if the number of
automatic qualifiers in an event is
too small to hold the event.
The automatic qualifiers are:
•Volker Mai
1991 ALL-AMERICA EVENT:
triple jump
AUTOMATIC QUALIFYING
JUMP: 53' O’
PERSONAL BEST: 54’ 0’
COMMENT FROM UGA HEAD
TRACK COACH JOHN
MITCHELL: “Volker should be a
definite factor in the triple jump,
although he’s nursing a little in
jury with a heel bruise."
■Boris Stoikos
EVENT: 351b. weight throw
AUTOMATIC QUALIFYING
THROW: 63’ 11 3/4’
PERSONAL BEST: 65’ 7”
COMMENT FROM COACH
MITCHELL: “Boris, he’s going
to have to equal or better what
he threw in the conference
meet. The event is new to
him, but if he can do that, I
think he’s got a chance to be a
scorer.’
•Tomas Sjostrom
EVENT: 35 lb. weight throw
AUTOMATIC QUALIFYING
THROW: 63’ 11 3/4’
PERSONAL BEST: 64’ 2 1/2”
COMMENT FROM COACH
MITCHELL: “Tomas is more
comfortable with the hammer
than he is with the weight. But
if he catches one right, he can
throw it a long way. Because he's
not as comfortable, he has to hit
it right to get it.’
The UGA provisional qualifiers
are:
•Forrest Johnson
1991 ALL-AMERICA
EVENT: 400-meter dash
PERSONAL BEST: 46.86s
•Dawda Jallow
1991 ALL-AMERICA
EVENT: 400-meter dash

Women’s tennis takes on Arkansas at home
• WOMEN’S TENNIS - After de
feating Auburn 7-2 Thursday,
Georgia will look to extend their
modest two-game win streak, and
record another conference victory
when they take on SEC foe
Arkansas at the McWhorter Courts
at 1p.m. on Sunday.
The Lady Dogs (10-3, 4-1 SEC)
need another win to maintain mo
mentum for next weekend’s match
es with Oklahoma State and ninth-
ranked California.
The Lady Razorbacks (4-6, 0-4
SEC) have struggled in their first
season in the SEC, and do not have
any players ranked in the Volvo poll.
In fact, none of their players have a
winning record in singles.
Georgia, on the other hand, has
Shan nan and Shawn McCarthy in
singles (No’s. 3 and 35 respectively),
and is the only school in the nation
