Pizza with an authentic Italian accent
Peppino’s Pizza: It’s like going for a slice in NY
REVIEW
By MELODY WILLIS
Staff Writer
“Two slice a cheese, I got two
slice a cheese," goes the common
refrain at the recently opened
downtown pizza parlor known as
Peppino’s.
Swathed in green and red fluo
rescent lights, the cavernous
restaurant offers pizza and some
other types of Italian food.

Peppino’s has a definite Italian
flavor - most of the cooks and ser
vice people are Italian, the walls
are painted in green and red
stripes, and numerous photos of
Italian soccer teams line one wall.
And the pizza!
The menu offers two choices -
Neapolitan (thin crust) and
Sicilian (thick crust). Topping
choices are numerous.
The pizza comes in slices or by
the pie. The menu also offers cal-
zones, different sub sandwiches,
salads with strange pickled vegeta
bles on top, and stromboli.
Being ever so dutiful, I have vis
ited the fabled Peppino’s many
times. Here’s my report.
Neapolitan slices are gooey. The
crust is unobtrusive and serves to
hold the sauce and cheese in har
monious union.
I liked the extra cheese option.
The more gooey, the better.
I tried the meatball sub. Lots of
meatballs. They taste like the ones
you get in a Swanson’s spaghetti
TV dinner. The sub had mucho
cheese.
I don’t like meat, but the sub

was good. The fresh-baked bread
was chewy. All food must have a
good bread base. Lesson number
one in quality dining.
The cal zone is a tricky entree to
make, but a joy to devour. That’s
lesson two, for aspiring cooks.
The Peppino’s master chefs cre
ate a work of art in the cal zone
genre. The fluffy dough carefully
surrounded the wealth of sauce
and cheese waiting inside.
A goldmine awaited me. It was
a fountain of cheese. Ecstasy.
What about the Sicilian slices?
Well, you are supposed to save the

lieve Peppino’s has the best
Sicilian pizza in town.
I’ve eaten at the primo pizza es
tablishments in town, but none

Who is the dough boy working up
these epic delights?
I’ve had Sicilian slices with ex
tra cheese and tomatoes.
Yes, the tomatoes are real
slices, like you get on a Grit bagel.
You can imagine the cheese. I
broke down and had a pepperoni
and cheese slice as well.
Parker is right. Peppino’s excels
in the PPSI department. I lost
track of how much pepperoni was
in that 2 inch square piece of piz
za. Amazing.
Service is quick at Peppino’s
There’s always an empty table.
Two TVs are devoted to showing
the afternoon soaps.
So pick a spot in front of the ap
propriate TV The jukebox has an
eclectic mix of music.
One day, we put in a dollar to
see what we’d get. The music
played for more than an hour.
Mighty impressive. Any jukebox
that has Stevie Ray Vaughan is
cool with me.
Peppino’s is open from 11 a.m.
until 2 a.m. on most days of the
week.
It’s located at 427 E. Broad St.,
between Bank South and

Spring House:
Great BBQ in
a great place
FOOD REVIEW
By GREG JONES
Staff Wrtter
When I saw the sign a few
months ago, my heart sank. It
said: “Coming soon Spring
House BBQ." And it was sitting
where the sign that should’ve
said, “The Exsirlence" had
been.
Well, although not too many
people had known about it, the
Big E. had been one of the the
coolest clubs in town, and it
had definitely been the best fo
rum in Athena for small bands
- with red velvet on the walla
and a revolving disco ball to
boot.
But, as the sign said, it was
closing down. And at the time,
that depressed me to no end.
But now, happily, I can say
that the very words “Sprine
House" put a smile to my lips. I
feel sorrow no more.
This, ladies and gentlemen,
is great BBQ. And the Spring
House is a great place.
It was opened by Tony Dye,
the former proprietor of the
Exsirlence, in September of
1991, and, judging from the
lack of vacancies in the parking
lot half the time, business has
been good. The food? What can
I say. I’ve had everything they
serve and it’s all great: the
chicken, the pork, the beans,
the bread, and, yes, the baby
back ribs. To me, nothing beats
getting the all-you-can eat
chicken plate with several
? [lasses of cold sweet tea. It’s
antastic. It’s what the South is
all about
And another thing: They
play good music at The Spring
House - A1 Green, James
Brown, Elvis, some pretty solid
country. You never know what
you’ll hear. But there is one
thing you can always depend on
-great BBQ, magnificent sauce,
and a fine atmoephere.
