Trojans seeded No. 1 in upcoming tournament
By JOSH KENDALL
Staff Writer
On the scoreboard at Marks Tennis
Stadium, home of the University of
Southern California Trojans, appear
three lofty goals— 1. Have the highest
USC team GPA; 2. Win the Pacific-10
championship; 3. Win the national
championship.
Even more impressive is the fact that
in the 1991 season the Trojans accom
plished each of these goals. The first goal
was achieved with a cumulative B-plus
GPA, the second with a conference record
of 9-1, and the third with a victory over
the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens in the
1991 NCAA finals.
The Trojans finished the 1991 season
with a record of 30-2, losing only to
UCLA and Stanford. They defeated
Notre Dame, Florida, Stanford, and final
ly Georgia in the national champi
onships.
Now Trojan head coach Dick Leach is
trying to prepare his team to repeat as
national champions, a nearly impossible
feat in any sport at any level.
Despite being the defenders, USC was
ranked No. 2 in the pre-season polls be
hind UCLA. After spending much of the
year at No. 6, the Trojans are seeded No.
1 in the tournament coming into Athens.
Chalking up two defeats over No. 2
Stanford in the regular season earned
the Trojans their tournament position.
“The No. 1 seed doesn’t mean any
thing,* Leach said. But he said he was
worried about the pressure associated
with the spot
The Trojans finished this regular sea
son with a 19-2 overall record, losing only
to UCLA and Stanford. They finished 9-
1 in the Pac-10 and won that conference
for the second consecutive year.
New players have had to step forward
for the Trojans since 1991 saw the depar
ture of All-Americans Byron Black and
Donny Isaak. The Trojans top four of
Brian McPhie, Jon Leach (the coach’s
son), Andras Lanyi, and David Ekerot
have filled this role admirably.
McPhie is 13-4 in dual matches and
21-7 overall.

ished the regular season with a perfect
record of 21-0. Black shared time at the
sixth, fifth, and even second positions.
Leach commented that he could not re
member another player finishing the reg
ular season with a perfect record.
Leach said little about his son Jon, the
second son of the coach to achieve tennis
fame at USC. Jon’s older brother, Rick,
played from 1984 to 1987 and became
only the third freshman ever to achieve
All-American status for singles and dou
bles. Rick joined legends Jimmy Connors
and John McEnroe. Current Trojan
Brian McPhie has since made the list
