Yesterday's Puzzle Solved:
Athens bands
By BRAD MISLOW
Staff Writer
Local music lovers and alternative fans have a
handful of surprises this weekend when the New South
Musical Showcase presents Flagpole Magazine’s
Athens Night tonight at the Variety Playhouse in
Atlanta.
Bliss, the Woggles, the Go Figures and Daisy will
perform to show that Athens bands are still at the fore
front of alternative music. The showcase will begin at
9 p.m.
The bands were chosen from 30 entries submitted
to Flagpole magazine. A stafF of writers judged the
bands on their press kits and demo tapes. Six semi-fi
nalists — Bliss, Hayride, the Woggles, Trinket,
Synthetic Flying Machines and the Go Figures — were
chosen and passed on to a panel of judges made up of
a number of record company executives. Bliss, the
Woggles, and the Go Figures will play at Athens Music
to perform at
Night along with Daisy at tonight’s performance.
“We think this is a well-rounded portion of Athens
music," Shannen Diaddigo, promotional manager for
Flagpole, said. “You got a grunge band (Bliss), a pop
sounding band like the Go Figures, and just an any-
thing-goes band like the Woggles.
“But in no way we feel that these bands are the very
best. That would be impossible to choose. There are
still so many great bands to see in Athens."
Flagpole Magazine’s Athens Night is to give un
signed local bands outside playing experience and to
promote independent labels to a wider audience.
Athens Night is only a part of the NewSouth Music
Showcase, which is made up of about 120 bands most
ly from the South that will perform in Atlanta clubs
such as the Variety Playhouse, the Roxy Theater,
Pearls, the Star Community Bar, Club Anytime and
the Dark Horse Tavern.
Local band Blitzen, featuring former Mystery Date
member Venessa Vego and former Roosevelt drummer
Atlanta's Variety Playhouse
Ballard Leesman, will play the Dark Horse at 11:30
p.m. Saturday. Blitzen did not go through the grueling
process of the Flagpole judging but is expected to put
on a rocking show nonetheless.
“Last year it was very well received," Velena Vego,
manager for Daisy and Venessa’s sister, said. “Daisy is
excited because they are headlining at a time when
their debut album, “The Hum of Daisy" is about to be
released on the local Planned Obsolescence label.
Daisy will be the final performer of Athens Night, go
ing on stage at about midnight.
“[Daisy! recently played at the Masquerade," Vego
said. “And judging by the hundreds who rushed the
stage, we should have a great show."
Flagpole Magazine’s Athens Night begins at 9 p.m.
tonight at the Variety Playhouse, 1099 Euclid Ave. in
Atlanta’s Little Five Points. Tickets are $5 and are
available at the box office or any local Ticketmaster out
let.
