Tennis Championships on Tuesday.

Georgia tennis players Bobby Mariencheck
and Mike Sell fought off early-season jitters and
a host of determined competitors this weekend
to advance to the singles championship of the
25th Annual Southern Collegiate Tennis
Championships.
Top-seeded Sell defeated eighth-seed Rick
Witsken 6-3, 6-4 Sunday, while second-seeded
Mariencheck earned a birth in the finals with a
tough 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory over Kentucky senior
Steve Mather.
The all-Bulldog championship will be the
first since 1987, when then-Georgia freshman
A1 Parker defeated Steven Enochs for the title.
“I’m going to play the ball, not Bobby," 17th-
ranked Sell said. “I can beat him any day and I
know he can beat me any day.”
“Mike is the greatest competitor in college
tennis as far as I’m concerned,” Mariencheck
said. “It will be a tough match and I just hope
the best player wins.”
The only problem now is that the two team
mates must wait until Tuesday to square off in
the championship.
Semifinals doubles action scheduled for
Sunday had to be moved to today to allow play
ers who had played in three matches to rest.
The doubles tournament will be finished today
so visiting players can return to school.
The semifinals and finals action in the A and
B doubles divisions will be held today, as will
the championship in the B division singles.
Sell, who was forced to three sets in each of
his first three matches, finally got on track
Sunday and managed to break serve four times
to cruise to a convincing straight-set victory.
The win avenged a loss to Witsken in the first
round of the SEC tournament last spring.
“It took me a while to get comfortable with
his serve because it’s so hard,” Sell said. “He’s a
great player, but I felt confident that I could
beat him today.”
Mariencheck, on the other hand, quickly
found himself in what appeared to be a losing
battle. After surviving a three-set scare from
fifth-seed Michael Kirsten of UAB, the 18th-
ranked junior quickly found himself trailing 5-
3 in the first set against Mather.
But Mariencheck began rushing the net
more often and escaped with a 7-4 win in the
tie-breaker in the first set. Mariencheck also fell
behind 3-2 in the second set, but managed to
pull out the win by a 6-4 margin.
