Ririe-Woodbury Dance Company to perform program tonight
By STEPHEN ROBINSON
Contributing Writer
The Ririe-Woodbury Dance
Company, one of the more active
modern dance companies outside
of New York City, will perform a
program dealing with a variety of
social themes tonight at the Fine
Arts Auditorium.
The performance will begin at
8 p.m. Tickets are $5 for
University students and $10 for
non-students.
“It’s a full program,” said
Shirley Ririe, artistic co-director
of the company. “You'll definitely
get your money’s worth.”
Among the dances being per
formed tonight are the debut of
“Invasion,” which features slide
projection, the tango and guitar
accompaniment in a tale of hu
man lack of compassion for each
other, Ririe said. “White” is a win
ter set environmental piece and
“Blue Horses," choreographed by
company dancer Keitn Johnson,
has music composed by Frederic
Chopin.
During the company’s three-
day visit to Athens, some of its
members taught two master
classes to University dance stu
dents at the Physical Education
Building Oct. 5. Two lecture
demonstrations were performed
for Clarke County School District
4th-graders at the Fine Arts
Auditorium Oct. 7.
Ririe said she loves working
with children in the lecture
demonstrations because they are
the future generation of dancers
and the future of dance itself.
“They are our future audience,”
she said. “They keep dance alive.
It’s very important to work with
them."
Ririe has recently published
“Teaching Beginning Dance
Improvisation,” a video and work
book teaching materials package,
which was funded in part by the
National Endowment for the Arts.
“Our lecture demonstrations
include improvisations with the
children and helping them to see
dance through their own eyes,”
she said.
Ririe-Woodbury dancer
Stephanie Nugent, a native of
Chapel Hill, N.C., said coming to
Athens was a lot like going home.
“I love Athens!” she said.
“There’s such a close-to-home
feeling with all the trees, old
houses and great weather.”
Nugent, a graduate of the
North Carolina School of the Arts,
said she felt very lucky to land a
job with the company.
“I graduated from college in
May of ’91 and started rehearsal
at two days later," she said. “It’s
not usual. In fact, I was very con
cerned about getting a job as a
dancer after college. I was very
fortunate. The company has a
great reputation and we work 37
weeks out of the year, so it’s a
very stable job.”
Nugent said that leaving the
company is not in her immediate
plans.
“It’s hard to say,” she said. “I
really feel stable with the compa
ny and I’m learning a lot with
them. Teaching is the company’s
strength. This isn’t where I want
my dance career to end, but I’m
taking it one year at a time."
