Meet after meet, Rowlette-Dill proves valuable
Sandy Rowlette-Dill: Practice definitely
makes perfect.

Everyone says practice makes perfect,
and Georgia gymnast Sandy Rowlette-Dill
has every reason to believe it.
Before arriving at the University,
Rowlette-Dill, a senior from Indian
Harbour Beach, Florida, trained at the rep
utable Brown’s Gymnastics in Orlando,
Florida.
Since joining the Georgia squad,
Rowlette-Dill has been competing with All-
Americans, National Champions and
Olympians, yet she continues to prove her
value as a team member to her coaches.
“She has been up against top gymnasts
since the beginning and has shown to be a
real competitor," said head coach Suzanne
Yoculan. “Statistically she has performed
at the same levels."
Rowlette-Dill said she is satisfied with
her performances, but still works to achieve
perfection.
"My routines are getting more consis
tent," said Rowlette-Dill. “Bars feel better
than they have all year.”
Rowlette-Dill earned a career high of a
9.9 on the vault, as well as a 9.95 on the un
even bars against Alabama last weekend.
“Her performance was as close to perfec
tion as you can get,” Yoculan said. “We felt
she deserved a 10.0 on bars."
Not only have her scores and routine
levels increased, but her confidence as well.
“Sandy had trouble with her concentra
tion as a freshman,” Yoculan said. “But her
mental strengths have really developed.”
Rowlette-Dill’s weakness in Friday’s
meet was the floor exercise, where she
earned only a 9.4.
“Sandy went out of bounds twice,” said
Yoculan. “Her whole routine could have
been executed better."
The floor exercises seem to have been a
troubled event for Rowlette-Dill all season.
Yoculan said this may be due to her lack of
flexibility.
“We try cover it in her floor routine by
focusing on her strengths," Yoculan said.
Standing at 5-foot-4, Rowlette-Dill is one
of the taller gymnasts on the team, but re
fuses to let that hinder her performance.
“Sandy is a veiy explosive performer,"
said Yoculan. “For her height, she is ex
tremely quick and uses that to her advan
tage."
Rowlette-Dill, along with fellow seniors
Jennifer Carbone and Heather Stepp, will
be honored at Senior Night on Saturday,
prior to the Bulldog Invitational at 7:30
p.m. Each senior gymnast will be presented
a gift while announcers give a brief profile
of their careers.
“It’s an opportunity to spotlight our se
niors and their contributions to the team,”
Yoculan said.
As a senior, Rowlette-Dill now must con
sider her future She said she her plans are
to stick around for a while.
“I want to go to graduate school,” she
said. “And I*m going to try to come to the
gym as much as I can.”
As for right now, Rowlette-Dill has her
sights set on the national championship.
“More than any individual goals I have for
my last year, my main goal in helping my
team any way I can,” Rowlette-Dill said.
Track teams compete today

Coming off strong perfor
mances in the SEC
Championships Feb. 27, the
men’s and women’s track teams
will compete in the Florida Fast
Times Meet today.
The men fared well at
the SECs, equaling
their fifth-place finish
of last year.
The meet will be the squad’s
final one of the indoor season be
fore they go to the NCAA
Championships on March 13.
The men’s team fared well at
the SECs, equaling their fifth
place finish of last year. “It’s
tough to move out of the middle
of the conference,” said head
coach John Mitchell.
Sophomore Brent Noon led
the Dogs by capturing the SEC
shot put championship. He shat
tered the school indoor record
with a throw of 65 feet, 1 1/2
inches. Senior Boris Stoikos, last
year’s SEC champion, also set a
school record and finished third
in the weight throw.
Sophomore Patrick Thavelin
had an outstanding meet, finish
ing third in the high jump.
Junior Garrison Hearat failed to
place in the 55 meter dash.
The women’s team equaled
their seventh place finish from a
year ago, although they im
proved their team score by 18
points.
Freshman Gudrun
Arnardottir continued her excel
lent season by placing second in
the 55 meter hurdles, and sopho
more Mary McClung finished
third in the 800 meters.
Noon and Stoikos are current
ly the only members who have
eclipsed the standards necessary
for an automatic qualification to
represent Georgia in the NCAA
Championships.
Otner Bulldogs, including
Thavelin, junior sprinter Forest
Johnson, and sophomore sprinter
Chequita Brady will be seeking
to qualify at today’s meet.
Several of the Dogs have pro
visionally qualified for the NCAA
championships. If there are not
enough automatic qualifiers for
any event, then the provisional
qualifiers with the highest
marks will be accepted for the
NCAAs.
