Los Angeles (AP): Ranks pulled for remarks about gays
Grammy-winning reggae artist Shabba Ranks was pulled from “The
Tonight Show With Jay Leno” guest lineup because of remarks he
made earlier about a song that advocates violence against gays. Ranks
said Tuesday he was sorry, but by then it was too late. NBC confirmed
in a statement Tuesday that Ranks wouldn’t appear on “Tonight,” say- *
ing the decision was made after producers reviewed a tape of Ranks on
the British TV talk show, “The Word.” He had been scheduled to ap
pear Wednesday evening. In December, Ranks commented on “Boom
Bye Bye,” a song by reggae artist Buju Banton advocating violence
against gays. The song was “most definitely right,” Ranks said then. “If
you forfeit the laws of God Almighty, you deserve crucifixion.” Ranks
said in a statement released Tuesday and published in The New York
Times that he regretted the remark. It was “premised upon my support
of Jamaican artists and their music, plus my childhood religious train
ing,” he said. Ranks’ publicist, the Terrie Williams Agency, said Ranks
iiad agreed to produce and distribute a public service announcement
opposing violence against homosexuals.
•>Jew York (AP): Lou Gehrig's disease gene identified
Scientists have identified a gene that apparently causes Lou Gehrig’s
disease, a breakthrough that suggests existing drugs might treat the
illness. The finding also furthers the idea that scientists may one day
be able to slow the rate of normal aging, a federal health official said.
“I think it’s the biggest discovery so far” in research into Lou Gehrig’s
disease, said Lynn Klein, vice president of patient services for The ALS
Association, which helped pay for the study. “We’ve been saying for a
long time that there is light at the end of the tunnel. This is a big bea
con.” ALS stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which became
Known as Lou Gehrig’s disease for the New York Yankees star who
died of the illness in 1941. The progressively paralyzing disease affects
an estimated 30,000 Americans at any given time, according to the as
sociation.

Based upon the E.M. Forster novel,
this is supposedly a visually

I've been waiting forever to see what
has been called a fine complement

all the critical and social hype, the
glorious Tate screen will bring my
longing to a close.

• Midnight (Friday-Saturday): Enter
the Dragon. I went to see this film
over and over again as a child. And
seeing It now, I'm somewhat worried
about myself. Still, there's no finer
"Yeeeaaaa!Wooooaaaaa!
Yeeeeee!" film in history, with a fine
plot, Bruce Lee and crew speaking in
English, more chops and chucks
than you can count, and a ruthless,
hand-exchanging villain (the claw,
the blade, the steel hand, and the
blow dryer...wait, that's "The
Kentucky Fried Movie.") How '70s
can you get?
• Sunday: Black Lizard. I'm clueless
on this one. Based on the Cinematic
Arts calendar, it seems to be some
kind of Japanese psycho-bitch, de
tective-love story, diamond-search
adventure of fine entertainment pro
portions. As anything else, if they
cared enough to bring it here, it
must be worth seeing.
• Wednesday: Sweet Sweetback’s
Baadasssss Song. Director Melvin
Van Peebles (father of "New Jack
City's" director Mario) created a film
which now stands as the monumen
tal moment when the doors for
African expression in American cine
ma were opened. This should be a
very unique, educational experience
with a funky score and vivid black
style and consciousness.
• Thursday: Ragtime. Milos Forman
("Amadeus." "One Flew Over the
Cookoo's Nest") directed one of the
finest American films ever made in
volving a race-conflict murder which
took place at the turn of the century.
Dealing with the struggle of African
identity at a time of great social
change, this lush visual, musical,
thematically intense expenence is
not to be missed. Not to mention,
James Cagney gives his final perfor
mance!

• Shadow of tho Wolf. Lou Diamond

in the story of Artic-region natives

breathtaking in the previews, though

• Swing Kids. What, children on a

film about two dance-loving friends
in Germany tom apart by one's in

might be moderately neat-o. We'll
