You better get on it today if you're going to be ready - for the
Boybutante Ball, that is. Today is your last chance to get those

Wood captures essence
of Californian country sound
By GRANT GOGGANS
Staff Writer

Forever (Hollywood)
Howardsville: Frontierland
(Outliers)
Fans of the late ’70s country
folk pop scene that thrived in
southern California and was ex
emplified by the likes of Linda
Ronstadt and The Eagles will
probably enjoy the debut release
from D.D. Wood, a frequently
charming CD.
Wood wrote most of the mate
rial, and it*s a rather strong fir3t
effort. With a slight twang in her
voice and a fine sense of poetry in
her lyrics, Wood has a fine future
in store for her.
The first single is “Louie
Cooper,” about a dead prostitute.
It’s very interesting, and the at
tempt to make some sense of hu
man misery works fairly well.
She also writes good love
songs like “Angel” when she
want6 to, but more often, the
charm and beauty that she sees
in the world are matched by a
sense of pessimism.
“Dreamin’," the final song,
starts off with her wishes for a
change to the “lonesome high
ways” and “endless streets” that
she’s used to.
The best track is “Sweet
Lorraine," a delightful, upbeat,
happy-sounding pop 3ong about a
friend’s descent into drugs and
strip clubs. The music and
Wood’s spry vocal delivery com
pletely belie the tragedy of the
song.
Another debut release from a
California band is
“Frontierland,” by Howardsville.
This album counterpoints Wood’s
release perfectly, as it fails on ev
ery level that hers succeeds.
Howardsville is fronted by
Jamie Powell, another twangy
singer who’s listened to too many
Dolly Parton records. Rather
than moving to Nashville and
producing a real country LP, the
band tries the country-pop thing
and flops.
The pedal steel guitar is
played incompetently, the songs
are badly written and Powell
simply cannot sing to save her
life. It’s a real shame that this
band got signed before they were
ready.
Of the nine songs on this LP,
only one is any good — “End,” in
which Greg Moore from L.A.
hardcore act Tower contributes
some blistering guitar that
sounds totally out of place, and
it’s because it’s so out of place
that it works at all.
Otherwise, Killough Weston,
the band’s guitarist, would be
playing and he’s about as talent
ed as those cretins who live down
the hall in every dorm and cover
drivin’ n’ cryin’ songs at 3 a.m.
On the album cover, the five
band members pose in their
finest Western wear with this
ridiculous looking cartoon bear
suit. They must be poking fun at
their title because nobody could
take this image seriously.
D.D. Wood’s album is a pretty
good release. Nothing godlike,
but respectable. Don’t consider
purchasing Howardsville. It’s no
good whatsoever.
Closing out the network tabs...
‘Cheers’ and ‘Knots Landing’
By GRANT GOGGANS
Staff Writer
Most of America will gather
around their T.V. sets over the next
two Thursdays to bid farewell to
“Knots Landing” and “Cheers,” two
dearly beloved series which are
both reaching their ends after long
runs.
Between them, the shows have
recorded over 600 episodes, and
“Knots” has joined the ranks of
such series as “Gunsmoke” and
“Bonanza” as one of TV’s longest-
running dramas.
With this in mind, a little retro
spect and personal appreciation is
in order.
“Knots Landing” has run for 14
seasons, a very long time by any
one’s standards. During this span, I
was only addicted for about a sea
son and a half, and I missed Donna
Mills’ days entirely. Apparently,
those nine years were the best.
I was hooked on “Knots” by an
old friend when I first came to the
University, and since neither of us
had TV sets, we were constantly
rushing about campus on
Thursdays, looking for a set that
wasn’t controlled by the “L.A. Law”
brigade.
I remember one fine day my
friend was off somewhere. Some
hunk of burnin’ love had taken her
to see Jay Memory or something,
and I watched it that evening with
about twenty others in the old sec
ond floor TV lobby in the Tate
Center (and a great room it was,
too). I was, of course, the only guy
in the place, which provoked all
kinds of curious questions from the
girls present.
“You watch this?” “I didn’t think
any men watched this show,” they
chirruped.
It was a great episode too.
Danny, Val’s current bad guy hus
band had gotten Gary, the old good
guy husband, heaving drunk and
loaded him into a jeep with no
brakes, sending him careening
down a mountain.
But that wasn’t the cliffhanger.
To the complete shock of all pre
sent, the final shot was that scum
bag Danny lying stone dead in the

swimming pool, with no explana
tion of how he got there.
TTien Michele Lee informed us,
“Sorry, Knots fans, but you’ll have
to wait THREE WEEKS to find out
what happens next!” It would be
pre-empted twice. I screamed loud
er than anyone in the room.
The conclusion of “Cheers” (after
11 seasons) is getting a lot more
press, mainly because it’s been in
the Top Ten almost consistently
since its premiere. America’s fa
vorite barflies finally have to pay
their tabs (Cheers could pay the in
terest on the national debt for a
year, with Norm’s tab alone).
I’ve never been a regular viewer
of “Cheers.” Perhaps I’m lazy, but I
know that it will always be on. Fox
36 airs repeats twice a day, and
even the network has been building
up for weeks showing two episodes
on Thursday.
With no continuity to speak of,
there’s never a hurry to catch up
with the show. It’s always consis
tent, there are always a few good
laughs and, perhaps most impor
tantly, it has rarely fallen into gim
micks to keep people watching, al
though that one from September
where they nearly burned the bar
down was close.
My favorite episode is an oldie
from the latter part of Diane’s
tenure, where she and Sam saw a
world-renowned marriage coun
selor, played by John Cleese, to see
whether or not their upcoming
marriage would work. Yet, he
doesn’t come close to stealing the
show as you might expect.
It’s a showcase for Shelley Long
and Ted Danson’s remarkable com
ic chemistry.
Pronounced incompatible by
Cleese, the two repeatedly return to
his hotel room to prove their love,
solely at Diane’s insistence. Sam
just wants to go home. Instead, she
keeps them up researching and do
ing magazine quizzes all night. One
departure is marked by Sam mut
tering, “So what if he doesn’t think
we should get married. No one we
know thinks we should get mar
ried.”
As far as grand finales go, these
two promise to be memorable, even
if they do fall into the “last episode”
trap of trying to be much bigger
than usual.
“Knots Landing” will bow out
with a two-hour shebang that ties
up every loose end they’ve left for
years. Donna Mills will return as
Abby, Joan Van Ark will bring Val
back from the dead and Nicolette
Sheridan will vamp.
Still, surprises are in store for
just about the whole cast. (And I
want to see Greg Sumner lying
toothless in a pile of his own greed.)
bid adieu
“Cheers” ends with a 90-minute
spectacle which may or may not
feature a goodbye wish from Bill
Clinton at the beginning, but will
feature Diane’s return (and her
overdue meeting with Rebecca).
It should also spotlight Frazier,
who is spinning off his Dr. Crane
character next season. This will be
followed by a live “Tonight Show”
broadcast from the Cheers set.
*Knots Landing" airs tonight on
CBS, and the last "Cheers" is on
NBC on May 20.
