SOCCER: International team rivalries abound
Peppino’s promotes the World Cup games with soccer posters.
From Page 1
“It’s a wonderful opportunity for
Spaniards to get together,” she said. “A
friend and I are going to try to get a (tra
ditional Spanish) costume together for
the next time Spain plays.”
Peppino’s owner Joe Peppino, who
said he’s “praying to God for Italy to
win,” said the largest crowds have shown
up for Monday’s Brazil-Russia game and
Saturday’s Italy-Ireland match.
'Nobody else in Athens cares about
this,” Peppino said. “I want soccer to
grow in this country."
With the World Cup in the United
States for the first time, students like
Sven Ruwisch and Jens Waechter, grad
uate students from Germany, have the
opportunity to see their favorite sport
presented somewhat differently than
they’re used to.
“It’s funny because the camera shots
are different and the commentators ex-
S lain the rules again and again,"
:uwisch said.
“It’s like when they show baseball in
Germany,” Waechter added.
Throughout Peppino’s there were
pockets of fans representing Spain and
Germany, with good-natured ribbing go
ing on between them.
Creighton Shafer, a senior from
Marietta, cheered for Spain on Tuesday.
“What I like about Spain is that they
have a passion for living like nowhere
else,” he said, his eyes glued to the tele
vision screen. “They’re aggressive.
They’re eryoying themselves.
“Look at the German side,” he said,
motioning toward some fans on the oth
er side of Peppino’s. ‘They’re quiet, weak
and not enthusiastic at all. They repre
sent their team well.”
German fan Waechter, who’s headed
for Dallas next week to see his team play
South Korea, disagreed.
“German fans are not that boring,” he
said. “Four years ago (when Germany
won the cup) it was like in South
America or Southern Europe. People
were dancing in the streets, beeping
their horns, there were parties all over
the place.”
Despite the intense rivalry, some
viewers were uncommitted to the teams
playing, like Gunes Susler, a senior from
Istanbul, Turkey.
“I’m here just for the soccer," he said.
Opinions on the future of soccer in
this country were as diverse as the audi
ence at Peppino’s.
“I hope Americans finally realize this
is the sport,” Garcfa-Castandn said.
“With the Olympics in Athens, people
are going to get more familiar with it,
and it’s going to get much bigger,” Susler
said.
Waechter disagreed. “A9 long as there
are no major league role models, it won’t
work,” he said. “When kids get out of
school, there’s no opportunity for them to
play (on a team).”
Despite a 1-1 tie in Tuesday’s match
(there’s no overtime in soccer, except for
the final), Garcfa-Castan6n and his
friends held up their flag and sang in
Spanish, “Champions, champions, we’re
going to be the champions.”
National loyalties, however, don’t stop
all soccer fans from er\joying each other’s
company. Just as opposing teams tradi
tionally swap jerseys at the end of a
match, fans of all nationalities enjoyed
the camaraderie of a shared love for the
sport as they waited for the next match,
Nigeria vs. Bulgaria, to begin.
“I see Germans and Spanish people
together - in Europe you wouldn’t see
tat,” Susler said. “That’s America for
you.”
JAM: some Tech
students won’t go
From Page 1
Nick Lusk, a junior from Marietta currently
living in Athens, feels that the show could be
pulled off much better if it stayed within the city
limits.
“If I was in Atlanta I might go see it,” Lusk
said. “But I probably wouldn’t know any of the
bands. I don’t know if any of those bands really
have an audience in Atlanta. If they put together
something like that in Athens, of course I’d go.”
Andy Kiehle, a junior at Georgia Tech, says he
will boycott the show simply due to the Bulldog-
Yellow Jacket rivalry.
“It’s a good idea,” Kiehle said. “Georgia Tech
doesn’t have any good bands, but I wouldn’t go be
cause, being a Georgia Tech student, I wouldn’t
support anything that has to do with Athens.”
Although they will be proud to represent their
home city in their Atlanta debut, Addison Blue
members Hank Beaver and Nina Williams say
they have their own reservations as to the turnout
of the show.
“If it’s gonna be as good as I hope, I’m gonna
feel really proud to be up there on stage with
some of these bands,” Beaver said. “We’re pretty
new so anything like this is really a great experi
ence for us.”
“If I wasn’t in it,” Williams said, “I’d still wan
na go see it. It just depends on the person and if
they’re really into music.”
