Lady Netters down
No. 10 Wildcats
Chauzu leads Georgia
women to first-round
SEC Tournament win
By DANIEL POLINSKY
| Staff Writer
In what has been a season of
close matches and heartbreaking
play, the Lady Netters got some
thing Thursday they desperately
needed — a good win
The Lady Netters won five of
six singles matches against No.
10 Kentucky in the
first round of the
Southeastern
Conference Women’s
Tennis
Championships to
clinch the first round.
5-1.
Earlier this year.
Georgia was beaten
by the Lady Wildcats
5-4 in Lexington. Kv.
This time it was a
matter of revenge for
Georgia head coach
.lefT Wallace
“We played very
well." Wallace said.
“I'm pleased with our perfor
mance today, especially winning
5-1. We beat a team that we lost
to earlier this year, so that shows
we re doing something right."
No. 19 Anne Chauzu. the No.
1 seed for the Lady Netters,
played well for Georgia. After los
ing the first set to Courtney
Roberts 6-3. Chauzu rallied for a
7-6 118» win in the second set.
With momentum on her side, she
finished off Roberts 6-2 to clinch
the match.
Michelle Anderson, ranked
No. 45 in the nation, didn’t have
as hard a time as she took down
Massoumeh Emani 7-5, 6-2. At
No. 3 singles, Jane Reid defeated
Andtva Nathan 7-f>. 6 3. while
Nadine van de Walle beat Kathy
Herring 6-4, 6-3 at the No. 4
seed. Kappy Kellet lost to
Courtney Allen 6-2, 6-2 for the
lone Lady Netter loss Kelly
Baskin beat Lady Wildcat
Christy Sigurski 6-3. 7-5 at the
No. 5 seed.
“We worked hard and pre
pared well, and it showed out
there today." Wallace said. “This
is the first time since
I can remember that
we are playing on the
first day of the SEC
tournament. This is
a rebuilding year,
and we lost some
close matches at the
beginning of the sea
son."
The Lady Netters
also look to use the
SEC tournament to
propel themselves
into the NCAA pic
ture.
“If we have a good
tournament here, we
should get into the NCAAs,"
Wallace said. “We had to work
hard, and we had some close first
sets, so nothing was given to us
here. Now we are looking for
ward to playing South Carolina.
We had some close matchups
with them this year, and it would
nice to beat them as well."
The win guarantees the Lady
Netters at least one more match.
They face No. 14 South Carolina
today at 10 a.m.

Tracksters to
face best at
Drake Relays
By JON GALLO
Staff Writer
The U.S. Olympic Trials may be
two months away, but judging from
the level of competition at this
weekend's Drake Relays, it could be
hard to tell the difference.
Michael Johnson, an Olympic
gold medalist, brings his 51-race
consecutive win streak in the 400-
meter run Former Georgia NCAA
National Champion and Olympic
400-meter hurdle medal contender
Danny Harris, and Gwen Torrence,
another Olympic gold medalist, are
both expected to showcase their
skills at the Des Moines. Iowa, clas
sic.
While the aforementioned will
use this weekend as a tune-up for
the U.S. Olympic Trials, which be
gin June 14 in Atlanta, the sixth-
ranked I,ady Tracksters and their
male counterparts will use the meet
to add more NCAA qualifying
marks to their ever-increasing dock
et
Junior Paul Blue is one Bulldog
who hopes to earn a spot in June’s
NCAA Championships in Eugene,
Ore.
“It's getting towards the end of
the season, and I still don’t have it
in the (400-meter) hurdles, so it
may be time to just focus on the
400-meter run," Blue said. “This
weekend I’ll be able to fix-us on it,
and hopefully things will return to
where they were at the beginning of
the season. Last weekend I really
died at the end of my race, and that
really worries me."
Junior Yolanda Flowers, who
has been dealing with an injured
hamstring all season, also looks to
improve her season-best mark of 18-
feet-6^2 -inch-long jump. At the
same meet last year, she led the
field until faltering in the final
round.
“It's frustrating for me at times
because |the injured hamstringl af
fects everything in the long jump for
me: the speed, the takeoff and my
technique through the air."
But the injury hasn’t only held
her back there.
Flowers also plays a pivotal role
in the 4x100 relay, where she teams
up with junior Larika Burton,
sophomore Debbie Ferguson and
freshman Tanja Reid.
“We’re going to have a strong
4x100," Flowers said. “Even though
we had a season best last weekend
<44.76 seconds), we can still go a lot
faster."
And they’ll need to. At last year’s
NCAA Championships, Flowers,
Burton, Ferguson and now-graduat
ed Chequita Brady sprinted to a
fourth-place showing in a time of
44.21.
University
to host annual triathlon this weekend
By JAY LOWE
Contributing Writer
Georgia has always been known
for its line of great athletes.
Saturday, the University hosts some
of the toughest track and field com
petitors to date.
The annual University triathlon
features close to 200 students, facul
ty and non-students in an event that
requires them to be in top physical
condition.
David Porter, coordinator of fit
ness and instructional programs at
the University, is in charge of the
event.
“This event is more* about partic
ipation and finishing than winning."
Porter said.
The triathlon consists of a 0.7-
mile swim through Lake Herrick, a
20-mile bike ride and then a 6.2-
mile run U) end the event.
Donna Schillington, a sophomore
from Lilbum, said she knows each of
the three events will be grueling,
but said she expects swimming to be
her strongest event.
“My background is in swimming,
so I hope to do well in that event."
Schillington said. “I ran in high
school, but biking is new to me. I
just hope to have a fun time with the
event."
Men and women of all ages will
Chocolate Shoppe
compete as individuals or on teams.
Although a woman has yet to win
the event outright, Porter said wom
en match up extremely well with the
men.
“Women naturally have a higher
endurance level than men," Porter
said. “It is hard to find a better-look
ing group of athletes than the group
that will participate in the
triathlon."
Kathryn Tritt, a senior from
Warner Robins, said she is looking
forward to participating in her first
triathlon.
“I know I’ll be nervous come start
time, but I am just going to cruise
though the event and not take it so
competitively," Tritt said.
The University triathlon is not
just comprised of students and lo
cals. Participants travel from
Florida. South Carolina and other
states to compete in the event.
“You will see athletes who come
to this event to win." Porter said.
“Those are your serious competitors.
Mostly, though, your top runners
are using this triathlon as training "
Robbie Burton, a senior commu
nications officer with University
Police and participant in last year’s
triathlon, said this event marks the
beginning of the triathlon season.
“This is the first big triathlon
event of the season," Burton said. “It
is a great event to be involved in if
you plan to take part in other
triathlons during the year.
Porter said volunteers are an im
portant part of the event because of
the large number of athletes who
will compete.
“We have a small number of vol
unteers right now," Porter said.
“The more volunteers we have, the
easier the event will flow."
Anyone interested in being a vol
unteer can contact David Porter at
542-5060.
