Artist Babyface is a
smoother producer
Unfazed band Drills it home
By HAROLD WATERS, JR.
Contributing Writer
Commonly recognized as one of
the best all-around musicians in
the music business, Kenneth
“Babyface" Edmonds offers up a 10-
track collection, “The Day," as his
latest solo project.
For this project, Babyface has
enlisted several talented musicians
.including Mariah Carey, Shawn
Stockman and Nathan Morris from
Boyz II Men, and the biggest sur
prise, musical genius Stevie
Wonder.
The opening track, a ballad ti
tled “Every Time I Close My Eyes,"
features Mariah Carey’s distinctive
background vocals along with a
silky-smooth soprano sax solo by
Kenny G. Although this song is a
nice opener, it sounds very much
like so many other Babyface tunes
that have come out recently.
The presence of Stevie Wonder
on any album usually equals a def
inite hit song. But when Babyface
and Wonder collaborate on “How
Come, How Long," the result is dis
appointing. Intended to be socially-
conscious and uplifting, this song
sounds more like a public service
announcement.
The first single off the album,
“For The Lover In You,” is a re
make of an old Shalimar song and
features jazz great Gerald Albright
and original Shalimar members
Howard Hewett, Jody Watley and
Jeffrey Daniels. The inclusion of
this uptempo track, which also fea
tures rapper LL Cool J, is unchar
acteristic of Babyface’s usual bal
lad-filled albums. While it may be
appreciated by some old Shalimar
fans, it really is one of the weaker
songs on the album.
“When Your Body Gets Weak," a
track featuring Stockman and
Morris, sounds remarkably like
Boyz II Men’s 1994 hit “On Bended
Knee,” quickly becoming boring.
While there are some good songs
at the beginning of “The Day,” it is
not until the end that Babyface’s
maturity as a songwriter can truly
be seen. On the title cut, “The Day
You Gave Me A Son," Face sings a
beautifully melodic and inspired
love song to his expecting wife and
unborn child. This song, which is
by far the best song on the album,
was remarkably written and
recorded in one day.
Overall, “The Day" is not a per
fect album. It is, however, a great
album from a very talented musi
cian. It could definitely be the
soundtrack to a nice romantic
evening.

Drill’s first single didn’t crack
the top 40, and the band blames it
on bad taste, sexism and stupidity.
“You have to speak for yourself
when you’re saying the music’s con
frontational. That’s a journalist’s
point of view,” vocalist Lucia
Cifarelli said. “If you listen to Trent
Reznor or Marilyn Manson, bands
that are a lot more hardcore in the
subjects they choose than a lot of
what we do, they're doing just fine.”
The band formed through an ad
in the Village Voice when guitarist
Dan Harnett placed an ad for a vo
calist. Roughly 80 people respond
ed, but he chose Cifarelli for her
stage presence.
CONCERT PREVIEW
Drift takes the 40 Watt Club
by storm tonight aa It opens
for Ash and Stabbing
Westward. Admission Is $8
and doom open at 9.
“It was great, it was the way it
was meant to be,” Harnett said.
“Lucia’s so cool, so talented, so psy
cho.”
Onstage, Cifarelli seems like a
woman possessed. “The beast
comes out in her. There’s a fero
ciousness about her. She scares
people," he said. “When she’s into it
and in your face, kids are wetting
themselves."
Yet the critics aren’t exactly be
ing forced to buy new pants.
“We meet a lot of dinosaurs who
are into the big hair lexpletivel
from the ’80s," Hamett said. “There
are a lot of people out there who
just aren’t playing female hands
and a lot who like mellower stuff
like Alanis Morissette or Garbage."
“(Our first single,) Go To Hell’
was meant to be tongue-in-cheek
and it’s obvious if you’ve heard the
lyrics," Cifarelli said. “I think that’s
lexpletivel. (Radio programmers)
just didn’t want to play it."
Drill remains unfazed “The sec
ond single is ‘Innuendo’ and if that
catches on, we can go back to ‘Go To
Hell," Cifarelli said.
Perhaps this time, the world will
catch on.
Topless provides Mondo enjoyment
By JEFF GRIGGS
Staff Writer
In what will probably go down as one of the most
risque album titles of all time, Philadelphia-based
garage rockers Mondo Topless has unleashed its fuel-
injected debut CD, “Fifly Thousand Dollar Hand Job.”
The 360 Twist! Records release is 50 minutes and
seven seconds of pure ear candy. Vocalist and vox or
gan virtuoso Sam Steinig, who once described himself
and his bandmates as “intelligent people who play
stupid music,” sings his heart out as if he were trying
to lure the prettiest girl in the trailer park.
Mondo Topless has mastered a sound that could
have happened 25 years ago if The Doors had really
been into amphetamines and the Beach Boys. For the
most part, the songs are three-minute long pop gems
that command your attention This stuff could arouse
people from a coma and get them dancing the funky
chicken.
Every tune on the album is fairly righteous. The ti
tle track is a bottle-smashing rockabilly number that
could make the Reverend Horton Heat think about
getting a day job. “Real Gone Girl” is undoubtedly the
quietest song on the album, but it still sneaks up on
you in the end as another bootylicious rump shaker.
The 14-track “Hand Job" also contains two songs
previously released on 7-inch — “I Want To" and “In
The End." Mondo Topless fans will be a bit surprised
(maybe even dismayed) when they don’t here that
lovely “snap crackle pop" vinyl hum behind the band.
But don’t let the clean digital sound fool you. These
guys are still, and always will be, dirty, raucous, beer-
drinkin’ rock pirates.
