Estes misses 1st by four strokes
By SCOTT HARTMAN
Staff Writer
After two rounds at the NCAA
Women’s Golf Championships, freshman
Shauna Estes was tied for 16th place and
sat six shots behind second-round leader
Janice Moodie from San Jose State.
Then, in the final two rounds of the
tournament Friday and Saturday, Estes
roared back to finish in fourth place, nar
rowly missing an NCAA individual crown
by just four strokes.
Her performance at the champi-
onships landed the Orangeburg, S.C., na
tive her eighth-straight, top-10 finish and
ninth in 11 events.
Despite shooting a second-round 75
Thursday, Estes was able to regroup and
make a run at the title in her final two
rounds of play.
Coming off her impressive play in the
championships and the season, Estes is
likely to receive All-America honors.
In Friday’s third round, she shot a
one-under 71 to begin her comeback.
She continued the effort Saturday
with a final round two-under 70 to cap off
her return and finish with a four-day to
tal of 289.
The fourth-place spot was the best in
dividual finish for a Bulldog since Vicki
Goetze took the NCAA title in 1993.
The 74.30 stroke average posted by
Estes over this season is the second low
est in Bulldog history, second only to
Goetze, who finished with an average
73.32 in 1993.
Heather Bowie, representing the
University of Texas, won the individual
competition, coming back from sixth
place and firing an overall three-under
285.
Arizona State won the team competi
tion for the fourth time in five years,
shooting a 294.5 average for the tourney.
Women fielders, runners qualify for NCAAs
By BRANDON ZIMMERMAN
Staff Writer
The Georgia track and field teams
wrapped up their regular season
Saturday at the Georgia Tech/Reebok
Invitational with the usual athletes win
ning their events in a final tune-up for
the NCAA Championships.
Sophomore Vigdis Gudjonsdottir won
her ninth consecutive javelin throw event
Saturday with a throw of 170 feet — her
third automatic qualifying time this sea
son. Gudjonsdottir is undefeated heading
into the NCAA Championships.
The women’s 400-meter relay squad of
Dana Burnett, Yolanda Flowers, Larika
Burton and Kelly Ferryman placed third
in its heat Saturday with a time of 45.28.
The group has already qualified provi
sionally for the NCAA Championships.
Freshman Erin Jones clocked her sec
ond-best time of the season (9:39.59)
when she won the 3,000 Saturday. Jones
has qualified provisionally in both the
3,000- and 5,000-meter runs.
Freshman Emily Keller was sixth in
the 3,000 (10:24.57). Senior Molly Orwig
finished her career at Georgia with a
fourth-place finish in the 5,000 in a time
of 18:40.29.
Freshman Rhonda Hackett had anoth
er solid meet, placing fifth in the discus
throw (156-7) and sixth in the shot put
(48-10 3/4). Hackett is a provisional qual
ifier in both events.
The men did not record any NCAA
qualifying marks this season.
Drew Griffin placed third (3:52.47) in
the 1,500, and classmate Jeremy
Campbell (3:56.27) was sixth. Junior
Chad Hales finished second in the 5,000
in 15:43.95, and senior Allen Morris was
third, running 16:03.51.
The 400-meter relay squad placed
fourth, running a time of 41.27.
Freshman Mike Robbins tied for sixth
in the high jump with a leap of 6-10 3/4.
The women’s team will learn this week
which athletes have made the cut for the
NCAA Championships, to be held in
Bloomington, Ind., June 4-7.
Bulldog provisional qualifiers who
hope to make the field include the wom
en’s 400-meter relay squad, Hackett in
the discus and shot put, Jones in the
3,000 and 5,000 and junior Tycie Coppett
in the triple jump.
Gudjonsdottir was the only Bulldog to
post an automatic score for NCAAs.
