Dorm life: A lesson in cooperation, sharing
By MARK ANTHONY THOMAS
Contributing Writer
You spent all the money from your summer
job decorating your dorm room to the fullest.
And when you move in, you see this stranger
has claimed your side of the room, nailed Spice
Girls posters everywhere and dumped dirty
clothes all over your bed.
Living with this newfound stranger may
seem unbearable.
Many freshmen have a hard time adjusting
to living with a stranger since most of them
have never shared a room with another person.
As a result, students must learn tactics and
procedures to foster a successful relationship.
“Each person must be open and understand
ing of each other’s opinions, friends and time
schedules and respect the differences and diver
sity that come with college life," said University
Housing employee Sholon Rucker, a senior from
Fayetteville, N.C.
According to Scott Anderson, housing man
ager, this year more than 6,000 of the
University’s 30,000 students are living on cam
pus.
With Reed Hall, a former co-ed dorm, closed
for renovations and not expected to open until
next fall, University Housing has students on a
waiting list for rooms, Anderson said
Some students who just can’t bear the
thought of living with another person choose to
pay $100 more a quarter for a single room
If there are no students on a waiting list for
housing and there are empty double occupancy
rooms, students can pay $275 a quarter to keep
a room to themselves.
While some students choose to pay extra for
a single room, others feel having a roommate is
as much of the college experience as all-nighters
and dining hall food.
“I couldn’t imagine living in the dorm with
out a roommate,” said Jennifer Nelson, a fresh
man from Algonquin, 111.
“Even though you value your privacy, a room
mate helps in the transition because they are
experiencing the same transition that you are.
We watch out for each other," Nelson said.
But sometimes roommates just don’t mix.
“My first roommate and I appeared similar,
but personal conflicts and no cooperation forced
us to request other roommates," said Dorian
Kennedy, a sophomore from Stone Mountain.
Kennedy said she thought because she and
her former roommate shared similar ethnic
backgrounds and religious beliefs they would
become close friends. Her second roommate was
completely different and Kennedy found her
easy to live with.
Students are not alone in their transition.
University Housing has Graduate Assistants,
Residence Assistants and Class Advocates who
live in each dorm to help students cope with
their dorm experiences.
Class Advocate Michael Runnels, a sopho
more from Augusta, helps students understand
the complexities of dorm life.
“Ultimately, we are in the business of build
ing bridges," Runnels said.
TO«l TYSCC The Red and Bto.
Wynema Lucas (left), a freshman from Duluth, and Mary
Catherine Cato, a freshman from Alpharetta, who live ir)
Brumby Hall, say respect is key to successful dorm life.
