Meadows and Dreams
Former Bulldog plays for the Colts in the NFL
By JOSH KATZOWITZ

ATLANTA — Adam Meadows Is used to
losing on the football Held
Under the reigns of Ray Ooff in the former
Bulldog coach’s Anal three years and Jim
Donnan In his first, the former standout
Qeorgla offensive tackle compiled a record of
22 22 1 from 1993 06
But those mediocre seasons in Athens
seem like years of championship lore com
pared to what Meadows must face every
Sunday afternoon playing right tackle for the
hapless Indianapolis Colts (211).
In the two years Meadows has been in the
NFL. the AFC East cellar-dwellers have
amassed a record of 5-24 with Meadows
starting all 29 games.
'It's tough, and It's getting frustrating."
said Meadows, who graduated from
McEachem High School in Powder Springs
"The problem we have to avoid on this team
is getting used to losing. But. I don’t think
we have those kind of people on this team "
Sunday at the Georgia Dome. Meadows
made a grand homecoming in front of 61,141
fans, but after taking a 21-7 lead in the sec
ond quarter, the Colts continued their losing
ways, falling 28-21 to the 11-2 Atlanta
Falcons
"I think we re building for the future,”
Meadows said
"We're making some steps by putting our
selves in a position to win the game
(Sunday) There's some things that we did
in the first half offensively pretty well, but we
Just couldn't close the deal," he said
Meadows worked mainly against defen
sive ends John Burrough and Lester
Archambeau. who leads the Falcons in sacks
with eight and a half. The 6 foot-5-lnch. 299
pound right tackle played well, allowing no
sacks and holding Archambeau and
Burrough to a combined four tackles
"I was ready for (Archambeau).’’ Meadows
said. “I prepared myself during the week,
and I knew what he was going to do He did
exactly what I thought he would, so the
preparation paid off.”
After the game. Archambeau. who is a
nine-year veteran, was quick to praise his
offensive counterpart
"The guy did a good Job," Archambeau
said "(Their offensive line) works hard out
there, and they don’t make mistakes. You
have to give him credit. He played a real
solid game."
If a word exists to describe the Job
Meadows does playing a position not many
people pay attention to. Colts head coach
Jim Mora thinks solid is that word.
"Adam is a good football player, and he’s
only getting better." Mora said "He’s made
real good progress this year. We’ve got a
young offensive line, but he’s made some
really good improvements. He's got a nice
future ahead of him."
And while Meadows had a hard time
adjusting to the NFL in his rookie season,
he's now used to living and working like a
professional athlete.
“The biggest difference (between college
and pro football) is speed." Meadows said.
"Guys are bigger and stronger, and the speed
of the game happens a lot faster. It’s
demanding, and you have to put in long
hours. Mentally, I found It hard last year. It’s
not just going in and practicing for two
hours and going home or going out with your
buddies. It’s a lot of work ”
Some irony exists, though, in Meadows'
life. His Job on the gridiron is to protect a
quarterback who continuously stabbed a
dagger into his heart throughout his four
years in Athens — former Tennessee play-
caller Peyton Manning.
But. Manning doesn't worry that
Meadows will seek revenge by allowing a 6-3,
250 pound linebacker slip by his guard and
crush the former Volunteer.
"He’s started every game, and he’s still
young.’’ Manning said "He doesn’t give up
many sacks, and he’s a good running blocker
as well I expect to play with him for a long
time."

FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK
By CAL POWELL

For the first time in nearly two weeks. Georgia’s football
practice fields were occupied Wednesday as the Bulldogs
went through a light workout in preparation for the Dec. 31
Peach Bowl game against Virginia.
But all the talk after practice was about who wasn’t on
the field: Wednesday was Georgia's first practice without
offensive line coach Chris Sc silo who took the head coach
ing Job at Tulane on Monday
Most immediately. Scelfo's departure has forced several of
Georgia's assistant coaches to pick up the slack in the
recruiting battle.
Many have been reassigned to different regions of the
country to recruit players Scelfo had been recruiting.
It remains to be seen Just how much Scelfo's loss will
affect Georgia’s recruiting, but the 35-year-old Louisiana
native was considered one of the Bulldogs’ top recruiters.
Scelfo recruited Louisiana. Atlanta and parts of South
Carolina.
"I’m sure (Scelfo's loss) will have some effect (on recruit
ing) Just because he's been the number one assistant here
and he’s done a lot of things for me,” head coach Jim Donnan
said.
"It’s tough when you change in midstream on a guy. but
fortunately, these high-profile guys he was on. I was involved
with. too. We’ll probably sustain a couple of losses because of
that, but at the same time, we might pick up somebody from
another area that we wouldn't have been recruiting.”
Donnan said.
Georgia’s two graduate assistants, Todd Donnan and PhW
Jones, also will hit the recruiting trail.
The battle heats up this weekend, as Georgia hosts sever
al top-name players making official visits
When asked when he looks to fill Scelfo's position,
Donnan said he has "no timetable."
Jones and tight ends coach Greg Adkins will work with
the offensive line until the position is filled.
> 1998 signee Regan Torbert made the necessary stan
dardized test score and will enroll at Georgia in January.
Torbert, a former quarterback at Peach County High
School, likely will play receiver at Georgia.
► Senior left tackle Matt Stinchcomb was named the
CoSIDA/GTE Academic All-American earlier this week by
the College Sports Information Directors of America.
