t The Red & Black’s guide to the week in entertainment
► 40 WATT CLUB (549-7871)

Anthem. Watch for my lame attempt at a DNC
interview tomorrow.

you still like this band, then I guess this would
be the place to go to go hear new tracks from
the new album, "Dosage." But if. like me, you

it’d be better than Collective Soul.
• Friday: Dance Party w/ Swing, '80s and
Latin music.

► TASTY WORLD (543-0797)
• Thursday: Gosa.

ties, gentlemen. Enjoy.

HEIGH-HO, LOVER! AWAY!
Looking for a ride this
Valentine's Day? No, not that kind
of ride, pervert.
Mount a steed.
For $15 an hour each, you and
your honey can go horseback rid

Double C Ranch will work with
your schedule and budget for a
perfect romantic afternoon.
“We don't just take you across
open plains,” owner Hugh
Culbertson said. “You’re out in the
woods, going through creeks and
ditches, getting out in the woods.
You can see turkey and deer —
it's really a different world to be so
close to town.”
)
The ranch opens at 9 a.m., and
horses stay out until 4 p.m., but
you should call first for a reserva
tion and to make sure the weath
er's OK.
“We’d like to see more students
out here," Culbertson said. “It’s a
nice change of pace.”

ATLANTA
ATHENS
Forget pricey candlelight dinners — snuggle 'round
a campfire at Watson Mill Bridge State Park for $10 a
night.
The closest state park to Athens, Watson Mill is a
gorgeous retreat to hike, camp, fish, ride horses or
canoe. And it’s all cheap.
Rent a canoe or a paddleboat for about $5 an hour
and explore South Fork River. Take an easy hike on
one of the park’s nine trails on 1,020 acres. Call first
and arrange a trail ride. Or just sit in a rock and look
at the waterfall and 114-year-old covered bridge, one
of only 15 left in the state.
“Just get out here and relax and forget about your
schedule," park manager Lee Moon said. “Spend time
doing nothing. Walk around and eryjoy the river. We get
a fair amount of students out here, just looking to get
away for a day or two.”
— Kristen Wyatt
From downtown: Take Lexington Highway to Ga.
10 Loop. Head north onto U.S. Highway 29 and exit at
State Highway 72. Turn right onto State Highway 22
and follow signs to Watson Mill Bridge State Park.

Couples looking for a romantic get
away have a variety of options around
the state.
One of the most popular, Apache
Ridge Log Cabin Rentals near Helen,
offers two bedroom cabins complete
with TVs, VCRs, stereos, fully
equipped kitchens and gas grills.
Near Annaruby Falls, the cabins have
river views and are close to Helen.

Lovebirds with a high credit limit
can go all out at the Inn at Chateau
Elan, north Georgia’s little piece of
France in Braselton. Situated on 2,400
acres, the inn is designed like a 16th-
century chateau and has its own vine
yards and winery. Tennis, golf, swim
ming, an exercise room and bicycle
rentals offer plenty of activity for peo
ple who make it out of the room.
— Shana Gallentine
From downtown: Take Lexington
Highway to Ga. 10 Loop, then get on
U.S. 441 North. Turn left at the
Clarkesville exit, following Ga. 105
for about 10 miles. Turn left and fol
low Ga. 17 for two miles. Turn right
onto Apache Way. (706) 754-7177.
From downtown: Take Lexington
Highway to Ga. 10 Loop, then Ga. 316
west toward Atlanta. Follow Ga. 8 to
Winder. Turn right at McDonald’s and
left at the next light. Follow Ga. 211 10
miles, across 1-85, and Chateau Elan
will be on the left. (770) 932-0900.
HIGH ON A MOUNTAIN OF LOVE
If you’re from Gwinnett or
DeKalb county, you probably know
people who lost their virginity
there. Needless to say, there's more
going on at Stone Mountain Park
than the summer laser show. It's a
romantic getaway all year long.
The main attraction is the
mountain itself, the largest piece of
exposed granite in the world. The
carving on the mountain — of
Confederate heroes Stonewall
Jackson, Robert E. Lee and
3
Jefferson Davis — is the largest
relief sculpture in the world.
But there’s more to do than gaze
at the rock. You can climb it, too, or
take a skylift to the top for spectac
ular views of Atlanta and the North
Georgia mountains. If that’s not
enough, take a railroad ride around
the mountain or visit the park’s
antebellum museum, miniature golf
course or petting zoo.
It costs $6 a car to get in the
park, and some attractions cost
extra, but there's plenty to do with
out spending a lot of money. And
Atlanta's just 16 miles away if you
want to finish the afternoon with
dinner downtown.
— Kristen Wyatt
From downtown: Take Broad
Street to Atlanta Highway and take
a left on U.S. 78 toward Atlanta.
Stone Mountain Park is 45 minutes
away on U.S. 78, and it has its own
exit. 1-800-317-2006.
New club
By MARK ANTHONY THOMAS
The Red a Black
“It's a concept, not a club,"
Corey Redding said about his
new Athens spot 300.
Redding, a 1998 University
graduate from AusteU, pur
chased the Joker’s Wild club in
December, changed the name,
changed the image and said he’s
trying to set standards for enter
tainment in the city.
“I always wanted to own a
club and to own my own thing,”
Redding said.
Redding said since his arrival
in Athens, there has been a lack
of variety in entertainment for
African-American students at
the University.
During his time at the
University, Redding sponsored
his own events, rent out clubs
and provide cookouts and social
outlets for minority students.

Now, Redding has embarked
on a new challenge — owning,
managing and marketing his
club.
300 contains an open bar.
dance floor, pool tables and has
become a popular hangout for
minority students, Redding said.
The building has a capacity of
300, which has nothing to do
with the name, Redding said.
As far as running the venue.
Redding said, “It's a lot more
work than I thought It would be
— It's not a 9-to-5 thing.”
Groups can reserve and spon
sor their events at 300, but
Redding said, "We’re kind of
selective about who we let rent
the place — we welcome (stu
dent) organizations.”
’’(Redding’s) a positive role
model tor young African-
American entrepreneurs.” said
Shondwella Ellis, a senior from
Baltimore. "He saw a goal, he
conquered obstacles, and now
he's one of the few making a
mark in Athens.”
As tor the toture, Redding
said he wants to bring entertain
ment to the city that hasn't been
here In a while, such as comedy
nights, and host hip-hop and
jazz bands.
