Lady Dogs meet BC in NIT semifinal
By GENTRY ESTES
The Rio * Buck
After surviving its flrst scare
against -a ranked opponent, the
No. 3 Georgia women’s basketball
team continues its run through
the prestigious Preseason NIT
with a date against another top
25 opponent.
The Lady Bulldogs will meet
No. 20 Boston College Sunday in
the tournament semifinal^, which
Will take place on the campus of
the University of Illinois in
Champaign.
Georgia (2-0) enjoyed a tough
road victory Wednesday in the
tournament quarterfinals, coming
back from a 10-point deficit at No.
18 Virginia Tech. The 65-60 win
snapped an 18-game home win
streak for the Hokies. Sophomore
guard Camille Murphy of
Syracuse, N.Y., led the Lady
Bulldogs with 13 points.
Georgia took a narrow home
victory over Alabama-
Birmingham Monday, defeating a
tough Lady Blazer team 76-75 at
Stegeman Coliseum In the first
round.
Meanwhile, in the other quar
terfinal matchup Wednesday,
Boston College (2-0) downed No.
22 Duke 77-70. The Golden
Eagles' victory prevented a
rematch of last season's Final
Four matchup, where Duke beat
the Lady Bulldogs to advance to
the national championship game.
The Eagles are one of the Big
East’s top squads and should give
the Lady Bulldogs another good
early-season test. Senior
guard/forward Allssa Murphy was
named by 8treet & Smith's as an
honorable mention preseason
All-American and entered the
season having scored double fig
ures In 33 consecutive contests.
Boston College traveled to Maine
for a victory in its flrst round
game.
Should the Lady Bulldogs win
on Sunday, they would step back
onto the court the following day
for a probable championship
game matchup against host
Illinois, ranked No. 13.
Swim team faces Ultimate Frisbee teams
USC at home today

The men's and women's swim
ming and diving teams are back
in action after nearly two weeks
away from the pool. Both teams
will take on South Carolina this
afternoon in the Gabrielsen
Natatorium at 2 p.m.
"South Carolina will provide a
good challenge for us," head
swimming coach Jack Bauerle
said. “They have a new coach and
a new outlook. They're not
quite as strong of a team current
ly as they will be later in the sea
son, but they’re still a good
team."
Senior Kristy Kowal is also
looking forward to the meet
today.
"We need to stand up and
race," said Kowal. "Whenever we
have the chance to go all out, we
need to. I expect a win.”
The Gamecock diving teams
look stronger than their swim
ming teams, considering the SEC
diver of the year calls South
Carolina home.
But don't think Jud Campbell,
one of Georgia’s top divers, will
let his winning streak be stopped
without a fight. Campbell is 3-0
so far this season.
SWIMMING AND DIVING
vs. South Carolina, 2 p.m

After the meet, the Lady Swim
Dogs will depart for Austin,
Texas to swim in yet another
tough meet.
"Texas is a lot stronger team
than South Carolina," said
Kowal. "They have 16 freshmen
on the team, so we really don’t
know what to expect.”
Fatigue could possibly play a
role in the strength of the
women’s swim team.
“It’s always tough swimming
two meets back to back,” Kowal
said. “It's especially difficult
when we’re traveling to the sec
ond meet.”
Bauerle is adjusting the
meet’s schedules and hasn't set
the relay teams in stone.
“We’ll be hard-pressed in
Austin,” Bauerle said. “It’s going
to be a stiff challenge for our
team, but it’s good to be in situa
tions like this as we challenge to
be one of the top teams in the
nation. Texas has a storied past
and certainly, year in and year
out, is one of the better teams in
the country."

host weekend tourney
By GRAHAM GARRISON
The Rbd 4 Black
This weekend, two Georgia
squads will compete with some
of the top teams in their sport in
the biggest tournament of the
season.
The men’s and women’s
Ultimate Frisbee teams will host
the annual Classic City Classic
at the intramural fields all day
Saturday and Sunday.
The men's field brings in 16 of
the top teams in the sport,
including national champion
N.C. State, national semiflnalist
Brown University and national
quarterfinalist Colorado.
Michigan, North Carolina and
Rice were also national qualify
ing teams that will play in the
tournament.
The women’s field includes
eight teams. Georgia’s squad
made it to the national semifi
nals last year, finishing third in
the country. The team is return
ing all its starters.
“We'd like to win it all this
j year,” said Kirsten Ogbum, a
! senior from Minnesota,
i Ultimate Frisbee players
spend two days a week practic-
; ing before hitting the road to
tournaments. They play year-
round, with the majority of
games in the spring.
“This fall, we’ll play only two
tournaments,” Ogbum said.
“We’ll probably play five to seven
this spring."
The men's team competes in
the toughest region in the coun
try. Georgia Tech, Virginia,
Florida and Tennessee all
belong in the same region, which
also includes N.C. State.
Even with all the competi
tion, the Georgia squad hopes to
make a good showing.
"This year, we’re a pretty
strong team," Ogbum said.
“We’re going to use the tourna
ment as a measuring stick."
For those not acquainted
with the sport, it’s described as
a fast-paced game with lots of
thrills.
“You’ll see an incredible lay
out catch you may see in a foot
ball game,” Ogbum said.
Along with some of the best
competition in the sport, T-
shirts and Frisbees will be on
sale while fans watch the event.
“It's free, so if someone has
nothing to do, they might want
to see some great action,"
Ogbum said.

Tickets are being scalped at
outrageous prices for this
game, but if you still want to go,
I heard Seminole wide receiv

Peter Warrick can get a good
deal.
Like most times these two
teams get together, there will
be a big fight before the game.
Oh, and this game means every
thing in terms of the national
championship picture, which is
a little clearer after Kansas
State, Mississippi State and
Tennessee lost last week.
Instinct tells me Florida
State will win, but that’s never
right, so I’ll take Florida on the
grounds there's no way the
Gators will lose two in “The
Swamp" in one season.
