An undercover look behind enemy lines
$
The Rid a Black | Tuesday, November 33,1999 | j
Lady Dogs lock up
WNIT championship
Thanksgiving weekend is fast
approaching, so that can mean
only one thing: he Georgia vs.
Georgia Tech game.
A bitter loss last season may
be Georgia’s motivation this
year, while Tech is probably hop
ing to rebound from an embar
rassing loss to Wake Forest on
the road. But there is much
more to this game than what
happens on the field. Within this
in state battle plenty of hatred
runs deep.
Georgia’s opinion on the
rivalry may be well-known in the
Athens area, but maybe not the
Yellow Jackets side. For one day,
I stowed away my red and black
and traveled to Atlanta for some
undercover work deep inside
Tech’s athletic department. I
wanted to hear what they had
to say.
Some images may pop up
when you hear the word
"Techie." Star Trek, calculators
and pocket protectors are just
to name a few. But what do they
think of us?
“Georgia fans are one of a
kind,” remarked a Tech official
unwilling to be identified. “They
take their football so seriously
But good Lord, get a life.”
The hatred for Georgia
GRAHAM GARRISON
apparently starts early for Tech
students. Sergio Aguirre, a
junior tennis player at Tech,
remembers being taught right
off the bat what to think about
Georgia.
“As soon as you get here, one
of the first things you start
learning is to hate Georgia,”
Aguirre said. '"Ib hell with
Georgia is in the fight song.”
Even freshmen orientation at
Tech Involves a lot of Georgia
bashing. Autumn Richards, a
former Tech student athlete
now working in the athletic
department, actually went into
Tech as Georgia fan.
"I was a Georgia fan until I
decided to go to Tech,”
Richards said. “They instill it
here, in six months I was despis
ing Georgia.”
For some Georgia Tech faith
ful, it can be a lifetime of hatred.
“I grew up hating Georgia,” said
Ben Herndon, a marketing man
ager at Tech. "The first thing my
Dad said that I said was go
Tech, boo Dogs.”
The football game isn't the
only time the rivalry ensues.
“Playing Georgia, you get a little
extra pumped up,” said Matt
Cozad, director of Tech’s tennis
center.
Still, it seems all the marbles
are played for on the football
field when time comes to these
two schools.
"In terms of in state games,
it's as good as It gets,” said the
voice of Georgia Tech football,
Wes Durham. “There is no doubt
the Tech-Georgia game is back
to where our forefathers held
this game.”
Complete with blowouts,
close shaves and questionable
calls over just the last decade,
the game has plenty for fans to
argue about.
Last year, Jacket fans ripped
up the hedges after their last
second win in Sanford stadium.
They are quick to point out,
however, the damage Georgia
fans have done to their stadium.
In 1993, a redcoat band mem
ber sliced open the giant bal
loon of Buzz, the Jacket’s mas
cot, making It deflate. Tech now
has security around Buzz during
games.
The rivalry has its moments
to second guess. The question
able call of Quincy Carter’s two
point conversion attempt in ‘98
may be as touchy to Georgia
fans as the pass interference call
in '97 for Tech fans. The call In
’97 negated an Interception for
Tech and put Georgia on the 8-
yard line for an eventual winning
score.
With both teams enjoying
success recently, the game has
more impact on the season than
earlier this decade.
“It also has a really good sub
plot,” Durham said. "The
Quincy Carter angle is one such
angle. He decommitted to Tech
before coming to Georgia, some
thing that upset Yellow Jacket
fans. Add that with bragging
rights for a year, and you’ve got
a great showdown.”
And after a few hours among
the Jacket faithful, I came to
one conclusion.
It’s great to be a Georgia
Bulldog.

With its most Inspired offen
sive performance yet, the No. 3
Georgia women's basketball
team ran past the UC Santa
Barbara 85-64 to win the
Women’s Preseason NIT champi
onship in Champaign, 111.
Monday night.
All-American Kelly Miller led
the team with 24 points on 10 of
18 shooting from the field and
nine assists. Coco Miller followed
with 15 points and four assists.
The win was Georgia’s third
straight over a ranked opponent.
Unlike their previous three
games, the Lady Bulldogs
grabbed a first half lead and
maintained it through halftime.
Center Tawana McDonald fol
lowed up a 22-point effort
against Boston College Sunday
with 10 points against the No. 10
Gauchos in the first 20 minutes.
McDonald finished the night
with 14 points, 14 rebounds and
four blocked shots for her second
double-double in a row. Guard
Deanna Nolan gave ihe Lady
Dogs a 10-point lead with a run
ning layup with less than two
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Georgia 85,
UC Santa Barbara 64
minutes to play.
However, Nolan, who scored 8
points in the half on 4 of 7 shoot
ing, rolled an ankle on the play
and did return.
“Tawana McDonald just con
tinued to do well,’’ said Lady
Bulldog assistant coach Terri
Flournoy after the game. “She hit
the boards, posted up strong and
did a great Job for us inside.”
The Lady Bulldogs pulled
away for good at the start of the
second half with a quick 8-0 run
and a 47-29 advantage. Georgia
would increase its lead to as
many as 26 points before eventu
ally settling for a 21-point victory.
Despite winning its first four
games, the double-digit lead was
the team’s first of the season.
“For the first time we attacked
people, we didn’t let people
attack us,” Flournoy said.
Georgia will next travel to
Orono, Maine, on Wednesday to
take on Stephen F. Austin in the
Dead River Company Classic.
