‘Toy Story 2’ blows away
competition at box office
By DAVID GERMAIN
The Associated Press
LOS ANGELES — James Bond
and Arnold Schwarzenegger had
the guns, but “Toy Story 2" was
the real wrecking crew, destroy
ing box-office records over the
long holiday weekend, according
to estimates Sunday.
Disney and Plxar's animated
tale of talking toys debuted
nationwide with $80.8 million
from Wednesday through
Sunday, shattering the previous
Thanksgiving record of $45.7 mil
lion set last year by "A Bug's
Life,” produced by the same stu
dios.
Schwarzenegger s “End of
Days,” about an ex-cop battling
Satan, opened in third place with
$31 million over the five days,
behind last weekend's top movie,
the Bond flick “The World Is Not
Enough,” which grossed $35 mil
lion in its second weekend.
“We rolled right over Arnold
and the devil,” said Larry
Gleason, president of worldwide
distribution for MGM, which
released the Bond film. The
movie has grossed $76.3 million
In 10 days.
The weekend's other big
release was “Flawless," starring
Robert De Niro as a stroke vic
tim who takes singing lessons
from a drag queen. It opened in
12th place with $2 million over
five days.
The No. 2 movie last weekend,
Tim Burton's comic horror tale
“Sleepy Hollow,” fell to fourth
place with $27.4 million
Wednesday through Sunday.
“Toy Story 2," the sequel to
the computer-animated hit of
1995, was expected to do record
business, but its take far exceed
ed Hollywood analysts' projec
tions.

"It’s phenomenal,” said
Robert Bucksbaum of Reel
Source Inc., which tracks box-
office trends. “Even Disney prob
ably didn't expect numbers like
this. I guess that’s what you get
when you put the premier family
film out on the premier family
movie-going weekend."
The movie averaged a whop
ping $24,969 a screen in 3,236
theaters, compared with $11,065
on 3,163 screens for “The World
Is Not Enough” and $11,960 in
2,592 theaters for “End of Days."
It was a record-shattering
weekend overall, with the top 12
films taking in $209.9 million, eas
ily beating the all-time
Thanksgiving high for all movies
of $182.3 million set last year. The
gross for the top four movies
alone this Thanksgiving was just
$10 million short of that overall
record.
"Toy Story 2," with Tom
Hanks and Tim Allen reprising
the voices of Woody the cowboy
and Buzz Lightyear, had the
third-highest gross all-time for a
five-day opening, behind $105
million for “Star Wars: Episode I
— The Phantom Menace” and
$85 million for “Independence
Day,"
The movie took in $57.5 mil
lion Friday to Sunday, breaking
the Industry record for a three-
day animated debut of $40.9 mil
lion by Disney’s "The Lion King,"
the studio’s top grossing movie
at $312 million.
"We went in with the expecta
tion that it would be the highest-
grossing film we ever released"
for opening weekend, said Chuck
Viane, head of distribution for
Disney. "Not only is that true,
but it’s beyond that. We’ve
already got repeat business, kids
coming back to see it again."
It was the fifth Thanksgiving
in a row that Disney debuted the
top-grossing movie. “Toy Story
2” technically opened a week ear
lier, playing in one Disney-owned
theater in Los Angeles before
going nationwide.
The movie “Tumbleweeds,"
acclaimed for a powerhouse per
formance by Janet McTeer as a
mother on the run from bad rela
tionships, opened in five New
York and Los Angeles theaters
with $45,730 for an impressive
$9,146 average. The movie goes
into wider release next month.
Estimated ticket sales for
Wednesday through Sunday at
North American theaters,

released Monday.
Leaders fear Southern Baptist
presence may spark hate crimes
CHICAGO — Religious leaders are asking
Southern Baptists to reconsider a plan to bring
thousands of missionaries to Chicago next summer.
Members of an interdenominational coalition
say they fear the missionaries' presence could
spark violence against Jews, Hindus and Muslims,
whom the Southern Baptists have said they want
to convert to Christianity.
"While we are confident that your volunteers
would come with entirely peaceful intentions, a
campaign of the nature and scope you envision
could contribute to a climate conducive to hate
crimes," said a letter from the Council of Religious
Leaders of Metropolitan Chicago.
The letter, sent Saturday to Southern Baptist
Convention president Paige Patterson, cites van
dalism last May at a mosque in suburban Villa Park
and a July shooting in which six Orthodox Jews “
were wounded outside their North Side synagogue.
Hindus, the subject of a Southern Baptist prayer
booklet issued last month, have staged protests in
Boston and Houston, as well as cities in India.
The Southern Baptist Convention, which has
nearly 16 million members nationwide, has circulat
ed similar prayer books aimed at Jews and
Muslims.
Chicago will be the first stop next summer in the
Southern Baptists “Strategic Cities Initiative,” a
plan to expand the Nashville-based church outside
its Southern stronghold. Other cities on the tour
include Phoenix, Los Angeles and Boston.
A Southern Baptist spokesman. Herb Hollinger,
said the goal is to spread the Christian gospel in
urban areas — "maybe door-to-door knocking,
maybe neighborhood block parties."
He would not comment on the letter because he
had not seen it, but he said the missionaries would
not specifically be targeting Hindus, Jews and
Muslims.
"We're not going there with antagonism in our
hearts ... in fact the contrary,” Hollinger said in a
telephone interview Saturday. "We have a message
that we think will bring encouragement and hope
to people.” 4>L
Seeking converts is one thing, "but bringing in
100,000 outsiders changes everything," said Rabbi
Ira Youdovin, executive director of the Chicago
Board of Rabbis and chief author of the letter.
Youdovin was joined by Cardinal Francis George
of the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago; the Rev
Paul Rutgers, a Presbyterian minister who is the
council’s executive director; and Bishop C. Joseph
Sprague of the United Methodist Church's
Northern Illinois Conference.
Sprague said the Baptists’ approach “smacks of
a kind of non-Jesus-like arrogance."
