‘Pippin’ returns home and takes the stage
By KYLE MINSHEW
kminshew@randb.com
“Think about your life ...
Pippin.”
“It’s the same question that is
being posed today,” said Chris
Blair, who will be playing the title
character in Athens Creative
Theater’s upcoming production
of “Pippin,” opening tonight.
“People try to base their lives
around these grand notions that
are never reached, when in reality
life is very simple.”
Running through this week
end, “Pippin” is the story of the
youngest son of Charlemagne,
the historic ruler of the Holy
Roman Empire. After returning
from his studies abroad, Pippin
becomes disenchanted with
court life and seeks satisfaction

When & Where: Today through
Saturday, Nov. 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m.
Nov. 12 at 2:30 at the Morton Theater.
Tickets: $15 for general admission,
$13 for students/seniors and $11 for

in both war and politics.
“Rivers belong where they can
ramble...”
“In many ways this can be a
very uplifting show,” said director
Tom Coleman. “But at times it
can be played as having some
very dark and scary elements. It
all depends on how you chose to
direct it.”
Returning after running away
from home and murdering his
father for his throne, Pippin final
ly finds peace in the simple plea
sures of a home and a family.
“I think it pertains to life,” said
Michael Harris, an actor. “And the
things learned through making
choices both good and bad.”
“Eagles belong where they can
fly..."
Soon approaching its 30th
birthday, “Pippin” was written by
famed composer Stephen Swartz
and was originally chore
ographed, during its Broadway
run, by theater legend Bob Fosse.
The show ran for several years
while on Broadway and garnered
a Tony award and a film version,
starring Ben Vereen and William
Katt.
“One of the things that drew
me to the role was Ben Vereen,”
said Harris. “He was one of the
few black performers who made
an impact in American Musical
theater. I thought, ‘if he can do
that, so can I.’ ”
The musical, Blair said, was
part of an artistic movement
which is still, in many ways, going
on today.
“I think that “Pippin” was a
part of a revolution in musical
theater,” Blair said. “It really
began with “Hair” and “Pippin”
continues in that tradition. It is
not a rock musical but it is more
pop based than classical musical
theater.”
“Gotta find, my comer of the
sky...”
The hybrid nature of the musi
cal poses a particularly difficult
task for both the performers and
production team.
“It’s difficult to sing,” Blair said.
“I’m drawn to the music because

character Pippin in the play that begins today.
at heart I’m a singer. It reaches
from the very base of your range
to doing things which stretch your
voice to limits. It definitely brea
the rules of classical singing. An'S
I’m all for innovation.”
