Dogs’ loss to Gamecocks blurs SEC picture
Seeding for conference tournament remains a muddled mess
By GENTRY ESTES
gestes@randb.com
Before Friday night’s matchup at second-place
South Carolina, Georgia volleyball coach Mary
Buczek stated that her team’s goal now that it had
reached the SEC tournament was to not be the No.
8 seed and draw the conference’s No. 1 team in the
opening round. Now, after a 3-0 loss to the Lady
Gamecocks, the conference standings are muddled.
Hinging on an SEC decision, Georgia could go
anywhere from sixth to eighth. Thanks in part to
the 15-6, 15-12, 15-13 sweep in Columbia, Georgia
(14-13, 5-9 SEC) finishes the SEC regular season
tied for sixth place. Due to an LSU split with five-
seed Arkansas over the weekend, the Tigers are at
6-9 in the SEC. Ole Miss is at 5-10 after losing 3-0 at
No. 2 Alabama Sunday.
Since those two teams are in the six-team
Western Division, they played 15 conference match
es. Because Vanderbilt does not field a team,
Georgia ended at 5-9 with only 14 matches played.
All probability has Georgia placed seventh,
between the two West squads, but Georgia beat the
Tigers after losing to the Rebels, making a tie
breaker situation cloudier.
Regardless, that enviable No. 7 seed would meet
Western champ Alabama (11-4), while the No. 6
team draws the Lady Gamecocks. The No. 8 seed
will open the SEC tournament in Gainesville, Fla.,
at 5:30 p.m. Friday against the top-seeded Florida
team that capped an unblemished conference sea
son with a 3-0 sweep of Carolina Sunday. The
Gators clinched their 10th consecutive SEC regular
season championship.
The Lady Gamecocks (21-5, 12-2), who will open
the tournament as a dangerous No. 3 seed, out-hit
Georgia .265 to .185 and out-blocked the Lady
Bulldogs 8-1 Friday to finish a two-match season
sweep.
Georgia established leads in both the second
and third games, only to witness Carolina come
backs. “We were not prepared mentally for a good
team like South Carolina,” Buczek said. “We start
ed off well, but we were not able to maintain our
consistency throughout the match.”
The two teams split the first 10 points of game
one before the Lady Gamecocks seized control,
winning 10 of the final 11 points to take a 1-0
advantage. Similar to late-game letdowns earlier
this season, Georgia allowed Carolina to come back
from a 11-7 deficit in the second. The Lady
Gamecocks scored eight of the game's final nine
points.
The Lady Bulldogs leapt out to a quick 6-0 lead
in the third. However, South Carolina chipped away
at the lead until Georgia held a 13-12 advantage.
Nevertheless, Carolina secured three consecutive
points to close the match.
“We played a little flat tonight,” said Lady
Gamecock coach Kim Christopher, “but we recov
ered well and had a great comeback in game
three.”
STEPHEN JONES The Red * Bum
a Freshman Luresa Forsythe and the Lady
Bulldogs will prepare for the SEC tournament.
