A Rashad Wright goes up for
the ball during Wednesday night’s
70-68 win over Vanderbilt.
Bulldogs break four-game losing streak
By JOSH KATZOWITZ
jkatzowit@randb.com
Following a first half in which
Georgia looked like it had no
desire to snap its four-game los
ing streak, the Bulldogs seemed
to remember something impor
tant after intermission — they’re
still in contention for an NCAA
tournament bid.
So, with D.A. Layne on fire in
the second half, scoring 21 of his
season-high 30 points — includ
ing a trey that broke the school’s
career record for 3-pointers —
and Adrian Jones draining a
game-winning jumper with 3.3
seconds left in the game and then
stealing Vanderbilt’s inbounds
pass, Georgia averted disaster
and kept its postseason hopes
alive with a 70-68 win against the
Commodores.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
U<ii 70 ~ b,lt - 68
“I knew we were tied up at
half, and I knew I had to put it
upon myself — not to be selfish —
to set the tone for the second
half,” said Layne, whose trey from
the right side of the key 34 sec
onds into the second half broke
Litterial Green’s career 3-pointer
mark of 215. “And once somebody
got going, there was a trickle-
down effect, and the whole team
got going.”
Even when Vanderbilt coach
Kevin Stallings adjusted his
defense to a box-and-one with
either Brendan Plavich or Chuck
Moore trailing Layne, Rashad
Wright — who scored a career-
high 13 points and had seven
assists — was there to contribute
and knock down his open looks.
“If we can get him to shoot like
that, we’ll be a threat,” said
Georgia coach Jim Harrick.
“Layne carried us for a while, and
Jones made great plays at the
end. This was a root-canal game,
and you have those. You just have
to go into the dentist’s office,
suck it up and let your defense
tiy to win it for you.”
As time wound down, howev
er, Vanderbilt (15-9, 4-7 SEC),
which was down 68-65, had three
chances to tie the game in the
final minute of play.
After Matt Frieje — who led
Vandy with 15 points — airballed
a 3-pointer and Moore bricked
his attempt, Plavich was success-
fill, swishing a triple from five feet
beyond the arc to knot the game.
But Wright threw an outlet to
Jones with less than 10 seconds
left, and after he battled Plavich
for possession of the ball, the
senior from Atlanta hit his game
winner.
“It was instinct,” Jones said. “I
got a great outlet pass from
Rashad. I tried to avoid Plavich,
but he knocked it out of my hand
when he dove. I was lucky
enough to pick it up, and I didn’t
think about it. I just shot it. I
guess I need to stop thinking.”
Perhaps, but if the Bulldogs
(14-11, 7-5) want to ride their
newfound momentum, they need
to remember the final play of the
game. At half-court with 2.6 sec
onds left and 7-foot-l Robb
Dryden in his face, Moore’s
inbounds pass to Sam Howard
was picked off by Jones, who
threw down a celebratory dunk
milliseconds after time expired.
It was an exciting ending to a
game that was mind-numbing for
the first 20 minutes. And after
three consecutive sellouts that
featured the loudest Bulldog
crowds in recent memory, the
5,213 in attendance Wednesday
were, until the final three min
utes, just as dead.
“Every fan that came to this
game deserves free tickets from
here on out,” Layne said. “We
didn’t have that many people in
the stands, but they supported
us. It still hurt us coming out (to
a half-empty arena). I know it’s
Valentine’s Day, but you have to
support your team when you win
or lose. We need to get the fans
back in here and tell them to stay
with us because we’re working
hard every day.”
