‘November’ only affects your tissues
MOVIE REVIEW
By GARDNER LINN
glinn@randb.com
Overheard at a screening of “Sweet November”:
“I can’t believe it — I just cried at a Keanu Reeves
movie.”
That’s right, “Sweet November” (a remake of the
1968 film by the same name) is one of those sad
movies, those films crudely designed to tug at your
heartstrings and soak your Kleenex. Call me heart
less if you will, but it didn’t quite do it for me.
Keanu Reeves plays Nelson Moss, a workaholic
advertising agent. He’s less of a character than a
cliche, chanting slogans and ignoring his girlfriend
(an underused Lauren Graham from TV’s “Gilmore
Girls”).
While at the DMV renewing his license, he meets
Sara Deever (Charlize Theron), another cliche: the
beautiful, kooky, free spirit with a bag-lady wardrobe
and a sunlit, knick-knack-strewn apartment that the
production designer probably dubbed “quirky.”
Soon Sara is asking Nelson to move in with her
for a month to “help” him, a service she performs for
one man every month. He resists, but after losing his
girlfriend and his job, he takes her up on his offer.
You can guess what happens next: he ditches his
tailored suits for flannel and jeans, starts hanging
out with a cute stray dog and a cute orphaned kid,
and falls in love with Sara.
This is a sad movie though, so there have to be
complications. I won’t reveal what they are, but
there’s a lot of crying and soul-searching and walks
around San Francisco at sunset as Enya burbles on
the soundtrack. It all feels manufactured, undercut-,
ting what real emotion the performers do manage to
drum up.
Theron is a wonderful actress with classic
Hollywood beauty, but she has yet to find that one
film that really lets her shine. This isn’t it, but it’s
not for lack of trying on her part; Sara is a complex
character made simple by a script that tries too
hard to manipulate the audience (the implications
of her man-of-the-month club are more interesting
than her reason for it).
SPECIAL i The Red * Black
▲ Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron star in
the remake of 1968’s “Sweet November.”
SWEET NOVEMBER
Directed by: Pat O’Connor
Starring: Keanu Reeves, Charlize Theron
Playing at: Beechwood, Carmike12
Grade: B-
The lowdown: (PG-13) It’s February. And this isn't that sweet.
Reeves is fine as well, but he’s still suffering from
Bill & Ted Syndrome — sometimes it’s hard to take
him seriously. He and Theron have a fair amount of
onscreen chemistry, but it’s nothing compared to
Zhang Ziyi and Chen Chang in “Crouching Tiger,
Hidden Dragon.”
Well, there is one thing that’s more than ade
quate: Jason Isaacs (“The Patriot”) as Sara’s neigh
bor Chaz, an amiable Scottish bloke with a couple of
secrets (hint: one of them involves sequins). Every
time he’s on screen, “Sweet November” becomes a
better movie — so much so that I started to wish it
was about Chaz.
Unfortunately, we have to settle for another inof
fensive sad movie, one that may wring some tears
but won’t stick with you very long after it’s over.
