‘Talented Tenth’ explores racial issues

The Black Theatrical Ensemble
will present “The Talented
Tenth” in celebration of Black
History month this weekend.
The “Talented Tenth” was a
theory introduced by W.E.B.
Dubois that stated, “From the
very first, it has been the edu
cated and intelligent of the
Negro people that have led and
elevated the mass.”
Richard Wesley, the original
playwright turned Dubois’s the
ory into a play and under the
direction of Dawn Whipple, a
senior from Columbus,
University students are bringing
it to life in the Morton Theatre.
Black students are black 365
days a year and they should con
tinuously help their community,
Whipple said.

and making money, but

your community. ”

ence in your community,”
Whipple said.
The play is centered around
the character Bernard, who feels
he has failed as a black man due
to his lack of participation in his
community and family, Whipple
said.
“Throughout the play,
he tries to renew his commit
ment to all of these things,”
Whipple said.
THE TALENTED TENTH

at 7:30 p.m., 3 p.m. Saturday at the
Morton Theatre

Coron Brinson, a junior from
Dublin who plays Bernard, said
the audience will be able to
relate to at least one character
in “The Talented Tenth.”
“You will be able to identify

various traits in each character
that are within you or someone
you know,” Brinson said.
“Bernard is a character who
realizes at the age of 43 he hasn’t
accomplished all that he wanted
to. He has been living his life
through his family and job, which
many of us can relate to.”
Bernard begins to live for
himself to better his relationship
with his family and his commu
nity and becomes involved in an
affair with another woman,
Brinson said.
“Bernard feels that through
his affair, he is gaining control,”
Brinson said.
Keizia Parks, a senior from
Macon and president of the
Black Theatrical Ensemble, said
the play discusses a variety of
pertinent topics.
“The play deals with things
like how upper-class blacks
relate to lower-class blacks and
infidelity,” Parks said.
“The actors are working hard
and fitting into their characters
well,” Parks said.
