Deanna Nolan returns as the
Lady Dogs crush the Wildcats
By DARREN EPPS
depps@randb.com
It was a game that matched
experience against youth, the
coach against his former stu
dent and two tall centers
against a team with a serious
height disadvantage.
And it wasn’t pretty.
Sparked by the return of
Deanna Nolan from a hand
injury and 24 points from fresh
man Christi Thomas, No. 5
Georgia simply overwhelmed
Kentucky with a 91-58 win
Thursday night at Stegeman
Coliseum.
Nolan, wearing a small splint
around her shooting hand,
struggled to find her shot (3 of
14) but still displayed her trade
mark tight defense and ability to
lead the fast break in her first
game in more than a month.
“She looked good out there,”
coach Andy Landers said. “The
shots she missed were close, and
I think it became a mental thing
with her. But you have to salute
her because she stayed aggres
sive in a situation where it’s
understandable to be tentative.”
Nolan was a little more criti
cal of herself.
“I really need to work on the
arc of my shot, and for some rea
son I’m falling back a little,” said
Nolan, who played 24 minutes
and finished with seven points.
“The splint on my hand prevents
me from following through like I
would like to, but I didn’t expect
to come out and play a perfect
game.”
She didn’t need to. Working
mostly against forwards that
were five inches shorter than

her, Thomas used the height dif
ference to her advantage, grab
bing 13 rebounds, blocking a
career-high five shots and even
earning five steals, also a career-
high. It only took her 13 minutes
of playing time to record her
third double-double of the
season.
Kelly and Coco Miller com
bined for 26 points with blister
ing shooting from the floor, con
necting on 10 of 15 shots to help
Georgia to a 21-4 record (9-2
SEC).
“I mean, you’ve got a team
with two players of the year (the
Millers) going up against a
freshman team like ours,” said
Kentucky coach Bernadette
Mattox, who played for Landers’
first team at Georgia in 1979 and
was the Lady Bulldogs’ first All-
American. “There’s not a lot we
can do, but we played intense
and I’m proud of our ball club.”
The Wildcats (5-18, 1-10)
started three freshmen and their
top four players off the bench
are all playing their first year of
collegiate basketball.
Their inexperience showed,
as they committed 25 turnovers
and were called for 27 fouls in
losing their fifth game in a row.
But one of the more exciting
moments of the game came on a
foul called against Georgia — a
technical on Landers. After
complaining his players were
not reaching in but sticking

their hands straight up in the
air, Landers made a comment
that referee Terri Maddock
didn’t find too appealing.
That comment?
“I told her I liked her pony
tail,” Landers said.

or not, Georgia will take the
floor again Sunday for its final
home game of the year, a 2:30
p.m. matchup with Arkansas.
