Airport security tightened
By AMBER BILLINGS

Area airports have tight
ened their security efforts
after opening for business in
the wake of last week’s terror
ist attacks.
Athens’ Ben Epps Airport
and Atlanta’s Hartsfield
International Airport opened
their gates Thursday after
grounding flights for two days.
All flights are now on schedule
at Epps Airport, according to
Tim Beggerly, the airport
manager.
Security measures have
increased across the country,
causing some lines to be
backed up for hours at a time.
Passengers will now undergo
extensive screening in order
to board their flights. Certain
luggage items also have been
banned, Beggerly said.
“They’re stopping knives,
nail clippers with files and
plastic knives,” Beggerly said.
Other security precautions
include restricted parking
within 300 feet of the airport
terminal and the removal of
curbside check-in. X-ray
screenings also will increase.
"“I would plan on leaving
an hour ahead of time,”
Beggerly said. “Be prepared to
be screened one more time
before boarding the plane.”
Airport security officials
have been working overtime
to enforce the new security
measures, Beggerly said.
“We have people patrolling
the perimeter of the airport
and checking the gates,” he

said. “We have Clarke County
police here.”
Shelly Lopez, customer ser
vice manager for U.S. Airways
Express at Epps, said passen
gers have been agreeable
despite added precautions.
“(Their) response has been
wonderful,” she said. “They
like the added security.”
Approximately 50 passen
gers depart and arrive at Epps
on a daily basis through the
four U.S. Airways Express
commuter flights, Beggerly
said.
Since Thursday, one out of
these four flights have been
canceled per day, which Lopez
said is attributed to cautious
flyers and Ronald Reagan
Washington National Airport
being shut down.
Lopez said Reagan
National is a frequent final
destination from Epps
TIPS FOR FLYING
>• Make alternative arrangements
for ground transportation such as
train, car rental or bus.
> Contact AAA provider or
Department of Transportation for
notification of road closures and
slowdowns.
>• Contact your respective airline
or travel agent to confirm flight or
rebook flight.
> Carry two forms of photo
identification.

GIVE: Donations Impressive’
► From Page 1
But local firefighters
aren’t the only ones helping
Athens residents reach New
Yorkers.
The American Red Cross
has set up a donation drive
downtown in the old Gap
building at 155 E. Clayton St.
Here, students can make
donations and find informa
tion about other local blood
drives.
“People around here are
saying they feel helpless
because we’re so far away.
This is something they can
do,” said Howard Scott, a
partner of Scott & Wells law
firm, which donated the use
of the Gap building to the
Red Cross.
Students can drop by
between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
every day this week. Sunday
the drive will be open from 1
to 5 p.m.
Money collected from the
drive will be used for masks,
gloves and other items need
ed in relief efforts.
It also costs money to
send volunteers to the disas
ter site, said Wilma
Hutcheson-Williams, manag
er of the Red Cross East
Georgia chapter.
In New York, the Red
Cross is providing such ser
vices as medical support and
over 65,000 meals, she said.
“The best thing has been
the students,” said Doug
Trott, an account executive
for WNGC radio. “It’s
impressive what students
here can do.”

According to a Hartsfield
spokeswoman, passengers
can board if they have an air

accompanied by a confirma
