Dogs look to quiet Brown
SPECIAL | The Red a Black
A Florida defensive end Alex Brown already has five
sacks this season for the SEC’s top defense.
By GRAHAM GARRISON
ggarrison@randb.com
Florida senior Alex Brown
is good, and he’s not afraid to
say it.
Georgia junior offensive
tackle Jon Stinchcomb, who’s
played against Brown the past
two years, said the All-
American defensive end’s
strength and speed are almost
as potent as his mouth.
“He’ll definitely let you
know about (his talent)
as well,” Stinchcomb said.
“He’s very proud of his
accomplishments.”
In the last two seasons
against the Bulldogs, Brown
has had plenty to talk about.
He’s made four sacks, one
fumble recovery and one
interception in two games. He
had an uncanny ability to get
to former Bulldog quarter
back Quincy Carter at crucial
moments.
This season, behind
Brown’s league-leading five
sacks, Florida has a
Southeastern Conference best
18 sacks in just six games.
“He’s got one of the best
first steps off the ball that
you’re going to see in a defen
sive end,” Stinchcomb said.
Speed is evident through
out Florida’s defense.
The Gators have gotten to
the ball faster and better than
any conference team this sea
son — leading the SEC in
scoring, rushing and total
defense.
In passing defense, Florida
allows just less than 196 yards
a game.
Opposing offenses shy
away from Gator comerback
Lito Shepard, an All-
American last season.
Bulldog junior wide receiv
er Terrence Edwards said
overall Florida’s secondary is
one of the toughest the
Bulldogs will see all year.
“You know when you’re
playing against those guys,
you’re playing against the best
players in their respective
state,” he said. “We’ve just got
to go out and play the way we
know how to play.”
Edwards, nor any of the
Bulldog offensive players, said
the Gators hold a psychologi
cal edge.
If anything, Georgia has a
slight mental edge heading
into Jacksonville because its
coach, Mark Richt, was 5-3-1
against the Gators as FSU’s
offensive coordinator from
1994 to 2000.
“We have a coaching staff
that’s been able to produce as
an offense and be successful
as a team,” Stinchcomb said.
“You’ve got to have a feeling
it’s going to be an advantage
to have (Richt) on our side.”
The Bulldogs are also an
underdog by almost 20 points.
In 1997, the spread was
close to that when Georgia
upset Florida 37-17, its last
win in three years.
Senior center Curt McGill
said being that big of an
underdog could work to the
Bulldogs’ advantage.
“That’s good, because that
gives us something to work
for,” he said.

Rugby teams also make
road trip to Jacksonville
I was reading the sports
page today and noticed an
article about the Braves’ 10
great years.
And that’s when it hit
me, the Braves haven’t real
ly played 10 great years.
Don’t get me wrong, they
played 10 good years, but
great teams seem to
win when it counts, and
the Braves haven’t done
that.
Years from now, people
aren’t going to remember
the 10 division titles, but
rather the four disappoint
ing trips to the World
Series.
If you don’t believe me,
think about the Buffalo
Bills. They will always be
remembered as a bunch of
losers.
And, though I hate to say
it, I am glad the Arizona
Diamondbacks advanced to
the World Series. I like to
see other teams get a
chance every once in
awhile.
So maybe you should go
to a club game and give
Club Crawl

another team a chance too.
Runnin’ scared
The men’s club soccer
team is looking forward to
regionals Nov. 2-4 in Tupelo,
Miss.
But, before they go
there, the team has to
play Georgia Tech.
Unfortunately, Tech has
rescheduled the game three
times, leaving the Dogs won
dering when they will play.
“I think they are scared
of the whoopin’ we
are going to hand them,”
team captain Matt
Nolan, said.
Hoping to ice the gators
After a 5-3 victory over
Alabama-Huntsville this
weekend, the men’s ice
hockey team will travel
down to Jacksonville to
take on Florida at 9:30
Friday night.
Gator beat down
Both the men’s and
women’s rugby teams will
be traveling to Jacksonville
to take on the Gators this
weekend.
The men’s team will play
Friday night with the
women following on
Saturday morning.
“We invite all who will be
in J-Town to come support
the UGA rugby team as we
take on the Florida Gators
in football’s ancestor —
rugby,” team captain Chris
Davis said.
— James Gallagher is a
stringer for The Red &
Black. Club Crawl appears
weekly.
