Friends eat their Noodles
get Fuzzy"
By KYLE WEHREND

Who are Brent and Derek? Why are they
eating noodles? Why is there a guy who looks
suspiciously like Spider Man on their
posters?
These answers and more may or may not
be answered this weekend at Town and
Gown’s Second Stage production of “Brent
and Derek Eat Noodles.”
“It’s a metatheatrical extravaganza,” said
“Noodles” costar Derek Adams. “It’s kinda
like the Muppet Show on crack, or a cross
between ‘Hamlet’ and ‘The Smurfs.’ ”
Over the summer, Adams and costar
Brent Thomas decided they would try their
hand at making a play.
“(The idea) came to us in a dream,”
Adams said. “We’ve been working on it
technically since June.”
With the help of the open-minded staff at
the Town and Gown’s Second Stage,
Adams’ and Thomas’ dream was made a
reality.
“To get your play done there, you just
turn in a proposal and they look at it and
approve it or turn it down,” Adams said. “We
handed ours in on a dry erase board.”
According to Adams, Second Stage’s
main focus is exploring new ideas.
“They focus more on avant-garde,” he
said. “We’re trying to push that aspect.”
Without an actual script fleshed out,
Adams isn’t too worried about audience
response.
“If you’re going to a show called ‘Brent
and Derek Eat Noodles,’ how can we not

meet your expectations?” he said.
Regardless of the somewhat loose nature
of the script, there is one part of the play that
is set in stone.
“We do, in fact, eat noodles at some point,”
Adams said.

Tonight, the Black
Theatrical Ensemble pre
sents “A Star Ain’t Nothin’
But a Hole In Heaven.”
Written by playwright Judi
Ann Mason, the play explores
three days in the life of two
Mends — Pokie and Joretta
— waiting to receive their col
lege acceptance letters back
in 1969.
During the three days the
two close Mends spend
together awaiting their let
ters, they encounter many
things which make them
think about the life ahead of
i them and what path society
I thinks they should take.

her. Her uncle disagrees and
does not feel that blacks have
a place in the college scene.
President of the Black
Theatrical Ensemble, Hilary
Carruthers, a sophomore
from Marietta, believes the
play has an uplifting theme.
“The message in the play
is that through perseverance,
anything is possible,”
Carruthers said. “You can
never let people hold you
back.”
“A Star Ain’t Nothin’ But a
Hole In Heaven” is the first of
three plays put on by BTE
this season.
Carruthers stresses the
message that BTE is not only
limited to AMcan-American
participants.
“Just because we are BTE,
doesn’t mean we are all
black,” Carruthers said.
“There are roles here for
everyone from all races and
creeds.”
The Black Theatrical
Ensemble was created more
than two decades ago to cre
ate awareness for AMcan-
American culture and play
wrights.
“One of our main goals is
to bring different black play
wrights to life,” Carruthers
said. “That was one thing
achieved with this play.”
Model auditions on Saturday
A student got the inspiration for a Athens
Fashion Weekend from television.
“I was sitting at home watching the Style
channel, and they were showing stuff about
New York Fashion Week,” said Bianca
Henderson, a senior from Cincinnati.
From there, the fashion merchandising
major began her own production company,
Luminesque, which will host five fashion
shows this spring.
“There is such a big music scene here, and
fashion is a big part of that,” she said. “I want
to expose Athens to a new kind of art.”
The company has been contacting other
Georgia universities to increase involvement.
This Saturday, Luminesque will be holding
a model search in Georgia Hall Room B of the
Tate Center.
Those interested should bring their pho
tographs and measurements anytime
between 4-9 p.m.
Models and designers interested in partici
pating in Athens Fashion Weekend should go
to (www.luminesque.cjb.net).
“We’re looking for a really diverse group of
people, nice-looking and dressed to impress,”
Henderson said.
