Tasty World hosts MC night
By PARKER DAVIDSON

Hip-hop is all over main
stream television and radio,
but you still don’t see a lot of
it in Athens. Some students
have decided to change that.
Tonight, Tasty World hosts
“Lyrical Warfare,” a contest of
rhyming talent between local
masters of ceremonies.
Montu Miller, co-creator of
the show and a senior from
Minneapolis, held the first
contest last year.
“It was pretty big and real
ly surprised us,” Miller said.
“Tasty World was packed all
the way to the back with
three (hundred) or four hun
dred people.”
Miller and Jason Jones, a
senior from Riverdale, start
ed the contest to create a
larger hip-hop scene in the
Classic City.
“We are really trying to get
more hip-hop going in
Athens,” Miller said. “We real
ly don’t feel like there is
enough. Instead of complain
ing about it, we decided to do
something about it.”
“Lyrical Warfare” will
include MCs of all forms and
talents. Some performers
have signed with small record
labels, and others already
have CDs out. But most
performers just want a little
exposure.
“The show is open to any
one, everyone who is involved
in hip-hop,” Miller said. “A lot
of people know very little
about it.”
Issues, Fort Knox and
Jones himself are some of the
veteran freestyle rappers
from last year’s competition
who will appear this year as
well.
The audience is the judge,
and its applause will measure
each MC’s performance.
“The winner is decided by
who makes the most noise,”
Jones said. “There is no real
way for anyone to be biased.
It is a chance for the people
to bring good quality rhymes
to their freestyle.”
This contest, according to
Miller, offers MCs of all tal
ents a chance to learn about
how to work a crowd and
refine their acts. The MCs

learn stage presence, and it
helps get their names out to
the right people, Miller said.
“Some of the people from
last year gave away copies of
their CDs, because you never
know — you might give one
to the right person,” Miller
said.
Prizes for the winner
include a championship belt
and a small sum of money.
The performers, according to
Miller, are mostly in it for the
experience and the opportu
nity to perform.
Both Miller and Jones
have high expectations for
tonight’s talent and audience
turn out.
“This one will do really
good,” Jones said. “Since it is
a free concert, people will
come anyway just because it
is free.”
