No red carpet for film
Richt can learn from his mistakes
By MATTHEW HUNT
mhunt@randb.com
Director Frank Darabont should be incarcerated
in the setting he’s most adept at filming.
His last two prison movies turned gold, first the
masterpiece “The Shawshank Redemption” and
then Stephen King’s death row saga “The Green
Mile.”
So why should Darabont be put away? He tried
to make a movie not involving a parole board or an
electric chair.
“The Majestic” stars Jim Carrey as Peter
Appleton, a rubber-faced man who drives off of a
cliff and wakes with amnesia on a beach shore.
The un-dead James Whitmore leads him into a
small back lot of Hollywood known as
“Stereotypical 1950’s Small Town,” where all the
residents celebrate the arrival (or revival?) of
Appleton, who looks like a war hero named Luke
who disappeared and was presumed dead during
World War H.
The party ends when a one- armed guy has
doubts as to the validity of “Luke’s” identity.
Jim Carrey proved himself a worthy actor in the
1989 comedy “Earth Girls Are Easy,” but if that ref
erence proves too profound, then it’s safe to say his
performance
in “The Truman Show” was first-rate.
However, this role, full of random smiles and
excuses to deliver lines with an air of seriousness,
was just very un-majestic.
The one-armed man finds love, Appleton’s iden
tity is revealed (GASP!), his alter ego’s fiancee real
ly loves Appleton for who he is, and the town that
shunned Appleton turns right around and throws
him a party.
The only man who doesn’t make out like a ban
dit in this film is the real Luke, who actually is dead
the whole time, and James Whitmore who is still
just old (but a great actor).
Stay away from this film and please go see some
thing like “A Beautiful Mind,” where the leading
male also has a mental disorder, also gets loved by
everyone, but definitely knows how to act.
THE MAJESTIC
Starring: Jim Carrey, James Whitmore

acting. So-so directing.

Coach Mark Richt was wel
comed into the Bulldog family
with open arms.
The antithesis of despised
former coach Jim Donnan,
Richt won in Knoxville and
Atlanta and was quickly
adored. But while the love
affair began in Tennessee, it
also ended there.
The Music City Bowl was a
disappointment in many ways.
Many felt the Dawgs should
have spent the holidays at the
Cotton, Outback or Peach
bowls, instead of in Nashville.
Then after a big kick return
and a quick touchdown, it
seemed as though the game
was over.
Boston College disagreed,
and after several penalties and
four turnovers, as well as a
mysterious punt, the game offi
cially ended.
In spite of an overall strong
first season, late game failures
are cause for concern. South
Carolina was a close defeat
thanks to two late game pass
es. (Where was late-season star
Decory Bryant before Ole
Miss?) Auburn came down to
the final play, with a good play
called at the worst time. Both
mistakes were understandable,
then came the BC blunder.
Richt tried to explain his
thinking afterwards — pin them
inside the 10, stop ‘em and get
the ball back closer with a first
down —but that thinking
leaves the same field position
of just inside the 50, with even
less time. It just makes no
sense.
Yet, one of the beauties of
college football, as well as all
sports, is that as soon as one
season’s champion is crowned,
a new season has begun.
Georgia’s offense is in good
hands. David Greene and Fred
Gibson were freshmen, and
have joined veterans Damien
Gary and Terrance Edwards to
form one of college football’s
most potent passing attacks.
With or without Randy
McMichael, who may go to the
NFL, the Dawg air attack will
be explosive.
Oft-injured Musa Smith will
need help from little-used
speedster Mike Gilliam, and
possibly redshirts Tony Milton
and Albert Hollis (who will be a
year-and-a-half removed from
major knee surgery). Returning
all but veteran center Curt
McGill to a vastly improved
offensive line will also help the
running game.
The defense may actually
improve over this year’s stout
bunch. A defensive line in con
stant change this year can
hopefully stabilize and get
healthy (and if Charles Grant is
reading this, please don’t leave
to become a 4th or 5th round
draft pick).
The linebackers will be fine,
with upcoming seniors Tony
Gilbert and Boss Bailey form
ing the heart of the defense.
A question in the secondary
is who will replace Tim Wansley,
although safeties Terrell Bierria
and Sean Jones solidify the
unit.
As for special teams, every
one returns except deep snap
per “Automatic” Andy Hogan
(who never botched a single
snap).
The coaching, especially late
in games, needs to improve.
Game preparation, and player
conditioning were much
improved over Donnan’s final
bunch.
Also, it is recruiting season,
where Richt and recruiting
coordinator Rodney Gamer
excel (a fine class has already
committed, with numerous
elite prep stars visiting Athens
over the next month).
This was Richt’s first year as
a head coach, and a learning
curve is to be expected. All ii\
all it’s been a fine year, and
looks to be a promising future.
But on Aug. 31, when
Clemson comes to town, the
marriage of Mark Richt and a
very volatile, restless Bulldog
Nation will be thrown into the
fire, as the honeymoon is over.

tributing writer for The Red &
Black.
Georgia boosts SEC’s home attendance ranking
By RUSSELL McLENDON
sports@randb.com
While the Bulldog Nation
is still stinging from the
Music City Bowl fiasco,
there is at least some good
news from between the
hedges.
Around the hedges,
actually.
Georgia football fans
packed Sanford stadium at
a rate of 86,520 per game
this season, good enough for
sixth in the nation in aver
age home attendance,
according to figures released
last week by the NCAA.
By selling out each of
the Bulldogs’ six home
games in 2001, the red-and-
black-clad faithful ensured
that Georgia would finish in
the top seven for the 19th
time in the last 20 years.
Perennial attendance
powerhouse Michigan came
in first with an average
home attendance of 109,908,
followed by Penn State’s
107,576 and Tennessee’s
106,843.
Georgia’s attendance also
helped fuel the SEC’s
average home attendance
ranking, which was best in
the country at 72,130.
The Big 10 took second
place with an average of
70,306, followed by the Big
12 (55,692), the ACC
(49,588), the Pac-10
(48,653), and the Big East
(39,667).
