Georgia’s women’s basket
ball team looked like a wreck

Coliseum last night, demol
ishing coach Saudia
Roundtree’s Morris Brown
College 105-36.
“We stayed disciplined and
focused tonight no matter
who I had in the game,”
Landers said. “I thought that
we did exactly what we need
ed to do. We never got crazy
or flippant. We never tried to
show off; we just played.”
The No. 8 Lady Bulldogs’
defense (12-1, SEC 1-0) held
the Lady Wolverines to just
seven points and a 13.6 per
cent shooting average in the
first half, setting an NCAA
record for the fewest points
scored in a half.
The record previously was
held by Liberty, who scored
eight points against Radford
on Jan. 22, 2001.
Led by Tawanna Thomas’
six points, Morris Brown
committed 20 turnovers in
thfe first half. The Lady
Bulldogs limited their
turnovers to 12.

Freshman places second
early in Swim Dog season
by DAN TOMAYKO

A busy weekend concluded
Sunday at the Gabrielsen
Natatorium, with a “phone”
meet between the Swim Dogs
and Alabama on Friday and
the Georgia Diving
Invitational, which spanned
from Friday to Sunday,
The Georgia divers played
host to 10 teams, including
conference rivals Auburn,
Alabama, Tennessee and
Florida, as well as ACC
schools Clemson, Virginia,
and North Carolina State,
and Big 10 powers Ohio State
and Penn State.
The best performance of
the weekend for the Dogs
went to freshman Todd Avery
with his second place finish
behind Matt Bricker of
Auburn in Sunday’s platform
competition.
The platform dive turned
out to be one of Georgia’s
most successful events, with
freshman Colby Carter finish
ing fourth, in addition to
Avery’s second.
“I thought they both did a
great job on tower,” said
Georgia head diving coach
Dan Laak. “It is tough to dive
platform at 11 o’clock in the
morning, so I am pleased with
the performances.”
Freshman Brooke
Bassham had an outstanding
performance in both the one-
and three-meter spring
boards, finishing in third and
sixth place respectively.
“I thought Brooke did a
great job,” said Laak. “Every
meet she is getting more con
fident and things are looking
better for the rest of the year.”
Laak added that hosting
the Invitational so soon after
the Christmas break was a
great way for the divers to get
back into the routine and
jump-start their preparations
for the spring season.
“I think the meet went
great overall,” said Laak.
“There have been a lot of
great dives this weekend, and
everyone seems to be enjoy
ing the meet and its format.
Everyone has agreed to come
back next year, which shows
we are doing something
right.”
Even though Friday’s meet
with Alabama was cancelled
due to inclement weather,
Swim Dogs head coach Jack
Bauerle thought the team
needed to get back into a
competitive atmosphere after
training in Florida over the
break.
Georgia solved this prob
lem by conducting a “phone”
meet with the Tide, with each
team swimming at their
respective facilities. Both
teams swam the scheduled
events while assistant coach
Harvey Humphries relayed
Georgia times via telephone
to a member of the Alabama
coaching staff and announced
Tide times over the public
address system during each
race.
. The meet will not count
towards either school’s dual
meet record, but the Swim
Dogs convincingly won on
both the men’s and women’s
sides.
The No. 2 Lady Swim Dogs
dominated the unranked
Crimson Tide 165-30 while
Georgia’s 16th-ranked men’s
team beat the No. 15 Tide
117-85.
Junior Stefanie Williams
had an excellent meet, win
ning both of the 50-yard and
200-yard freestyle events as
well as participating on the
winning 400-yard freestyle
relay.
Although it lacked the
competitive atmosphere of a
dual meet, freshman Robert
Margalis won the 1,000-yard
freestyle in 8:57.28, which is
the fastest time of any
Bulldog in the program s his
tory, as well as the fastest
time in the event ever posted
at Gabrielsen.
Both Swim Dogs teams
jump back in action next
week with a pair of dual
meets at Texas.
The women will face off on
Friday while the men will take
on the defending national
champion Longhorns on
Saturday.

Freshman forward Kara
Braxton was on fire early in
the game, contributing 16
points on a 7-for-7 shooting
performance.
“I knew that (Morris
Brown) was somebody that
was going to come out and
play hard,” Braxton said. “We
can’t take any team for grant
ed. We knew that we had to
come out and play hard,
especially after the loss the
other day.”
After going on a 27-3 run,
the Lady Bulldogs sent
Morris Brown down 59-7 at
the half.
With just under 13 min
utes left in the ball game, the
Lady Wolverines managed to
double their first half score,
trailing 77-14. However, the
squad was never able to give
the Lady Bulldogs a scare.
Georgia used a balanced
offensive attack, tallying 32
assists, 25 steals and 47
rebounds in the victory.
Braxton ended the
evening with 20 points, while
teammates Tameiko

“It lifted our spirits a little
bit,” Thomas said. “We
weren’t real proud of how we
played (against Michigan

hard every game.”

Carolina (14-1, SEC 2-0) at

DEAR BAXTER...
UGA’s second favorite bulldog answers your questions!
Dear Baxter
I have to buy books for my classes and I
don’t know what to do, where to go or
when to buy ‘em. Help me!
Thanks,
Needsum Books
DEAR NEEDSUM BOOKS: Try
going to Baxter Street Bookstore, right
across from the highrise dorms on
Baxter. They have tons of used books, so
you can save up to 25%. And you can
buy your books as soon as you get to
town. Beat the rush.
Baxter
Dear Baxter
I have a date with a special girl but I’m
on a budget. How can I show her a good
time without looking like a tightwad?
Help,
Budget
DEAR BUDGET: The first way to
economize at UGA is to make sure you
don’t spend more money than you have
to. Take your textbooks for instance.
Don’t spend big bucks on new ones. Get
used textbooks at Baxter Street
Bookstore. They’re exactly like the new
ones except they’re a lot less expensive.
You’ll probably save enough to impress
your date. .
Baxter
Dear Baxter
How can I be sure I get the most buy
back value for my books?
Thanks,
Flat Broke
DEAR BROKE: If your book is being
used again and in a large quantity, then
you have the best hopes of getting a lot
for your book. Baxter Street Bookstore
pays 1/2 the list price for any book being
used again.
