Cronkite to host Feabodys
By JEREMY CRAIG
jcraig@randb.com
Former CBS Evening
News anchor Walter Cronkite
will host the 61st Annual
Peabody Award Luncheon
May 20 in New York City.
“I’m delighted,” said
Horace Newcomb, director of
the Peabody Awards pro
gram at the Grady College of
Journalism and Mass
Communication. “For many
people, Cronkite is a historic
figure who really does repre
sent validity and authority in
television.”
Cronkite, 85, worked for
CBS from 1950 to 1981, cov
ering politics and helping
start the CBS Evening News
in 1962. Since his retirement,
Cronkite has narrated docu
mentaries for CBS and the
Public Broadcasting Service.
“He was thrilled to be
asked and was delighted to
accept the invitation,”
Newcomb said.
Margaret Goerig, a junior
from Athens who works on
the production crew for the
Peabody Awards, said she
anticipates Cronkite’s pres
ence at the New York
ceremony.
“It will be a privilege to
hear what he has to say,” she
said. “I hope to be that active
when I get older. It’s inspir
ing to see his kind of energy.”
The Peabody Award hon
ors achievement in electronic
media, such as radio, televi
sion, computer multimedia
and the Internet.
About 1,050 entries were
received last year, said Tom
Hoover, coordinator for the
Peabody program.
Winners will be announced
Mar. 27 at Georgia Public
Television in Atlanta. The
New York luncheon will
publicly honor this year’s
recipients at the Waldorf-
Astoria Hotel.
In previous years, the
March announcements were
made in New York.
“We are an activity of the
University, and we thought it
would be a good idea to bring
it back home,” Hoover said.
The decision to hold the
March announcement in
Atlanta was made before the
Sept. 11 attacks in New York,
he said.
Honored by the Peabody
Awards last year were “The
Sopranos” and “The West
Wing,” both of which gar
nered the prize in 1999 and
2000.
A committee of student
and faculty judges
recommends selected entries
for the award to a 15-member
advisory board, composed of
scholars, critics, media
executives and other nota
bles, Newcomb said.
Screenings of entries
begin in a few weeks, said
Sara Hays, a senior from
Memphis, Tenn., and stu
dent judge.
She said she expects the
process to be time
consuming.
Budget
outlook
for 2002
Gov. Roy Barnes has
presented the supplemen
tal budget for this fiscal
year, but a University
official said they are wait
ing for next year’s budget
to be revealed some time
next week.
This year’s budget
includes a number of items
important to the
University, said Hank
Huckaby, senior vice presi
dent for Finance and
Administration.
One recommended pro
ject is the $4.3 million
Veterinary Bio Resources
Facility, which would house
canines used for research
in the College of Veterinary
Medicine, he said.
Another project is the
$40 million Paul
C. Coverdell Building.
Huckaby said $10 million
will come from the
state, $10 million from
the federal government
and $20 million from
the Georgia Research
Foundation.
The Special Collections
Library will receive
$240,000 for pre-design
work, he said.
“We have to submit
budget cuts for the year,”
Huckaby said. “Those
funds were fully deleted,
but that was no
surprise. We knew that was
coming.”
The new budget has to
be presented some time
next week, Huckaby said,
and it is traditionally
presented the Thursday
of the week when the Office
of Planning and Budget
meets.

Family Housing
resolves conflict
*

By AMY LEIGH WOMACK

A young couple encoun
tered difficulties when the
Family Housing unit
they leased for spring
semester was rented to
someone else.
Karen Boyette, a junior
from Eatonton, and her
husband, Shawn, said they
were contacted Nov. 28 and
asked to sign a housing
lease, which they signed later
that day.
He said they reported to
Family Housing Jan. 4 and
were told the unit had been
leased to another party.
“We talked to three differ
ent people at Family
Housing, but we got conflict
ing answers,” Shawn Boyette
said.
They were offered a room
at a hotel until Jan. 10 and
were told by Family Housing
officials that they would
be reimbursed, Shawn
Boyette said.
Ken Goyen, manager of
Family Housing, said he
explored other options
for the Boyettes and regrets
how the error affected them.
Karen Boyette said she
spoke with Jim Day, director
of University Housing, about
compensation for the
inconvenience.
“I suggested to Mr. Day
that, in compensation for the
confusion, we would be given
first priority for an apartment
this semester and first pick
for an apartment this
summer,” she said.
She said her request was
granted.
“I don’t know of any other
time this has occurred in
the nine years that I’ve been
with Family Housing,” Goyen
said. “We’re' trying to see
if there’s anything that our
office needs to do to keep this
from happening again.”
Day was not available for
comment at press time.
