VARIETY & SPORTS
Tasty World to host new flavor, Kristie Stremel
By LEAH NEWMAN

Kristie Stremel’s song
writing proves songs don’t
have to be deep to mean
something.
Her simple lyrics address
everything from wrecked
cars to love in a way anyone
can relate to.
Sounding remarkably like
Melissa Etheridge covering
Joan Jett tunes, Stremel
admits her musical roots
were heavily influenced by
“any woman that was
singing in the eighties.”
Her live shows echo this
upbringing, with covers
ranging from Creedence
Clearwater Revival’s
“Traveling Band” to
“American Girl” by Tom
Petty.
“I like throwing in one to
keep people on their toes,”
she said. “Its always fun to
see (the audience) when
they finally get it.”
One thing she said, how
ever, is she doesn’t approve
of is the new MTV hit ver
sion of the Goo Goo Dolls
performing the Tom Petty
classic.
“I was really pissed by
that,” she said.
With their album barely
four months old, Stremel
looks ahead. Her band,
comprised of guitarist Chris
Meek and rhythm section
Mark Ellis and Mike Meyers,
will be debuting new materi
al on their winter tour, she
said. They are scheduled to
begin recording their next
album in April.
Stremel’s current album,
“All I really Want,” was
released late last year, satis
fying thousands of fans
around her home-base of
Kansas City, Mo.
But what Stremel said
she really wants is to take
things a step further.

fight against Cocks

Georgia’s women’s basket
ball team will face its biggest
challenge of the season
tonight as No. 14 South
Carolina comes to Stegeman
Coliseum at 7.
In order for the No. 8 Lady
Bulldogs (12-1, SEC 1-0) to
be successful against the
Lady Gamecocks (14-1, SEC
2-0), the squad must put
together an offensively-
charged first half like it did
Monday night.
In the victory against
coach Saudia Roundtree’s
Morris Brown College,
Georgia held the Lady
Wolverines to just seven
points — the lowest first half
score in NCAA history.
“We knew that we had to
come out and play hard to
prepare for the next game
against a top-10 ranked
team,” said freshman forward
Kara Braxton. “We worked
on a lot of things that we
needed to work on, and I
think that because of this
win, we are a lot more pre
pared for South Carolina. ”
The Lady Bulldogs show
cased their offensive arsenal
against Morris Brown with
three players in double digits
and every player on the ros
ter making a basket in the
107-36 victory. Braxton, the
team’s leading scorer with 20
points, was unstoppable in
the first half.
Yet, Georgia had moments
of sloppy play in the second
half reminiscent of its perfor
mance in the loss to
Michigan State. The Lady
Bulldogs, who had 23
turnovers Monday evening,
will have to limit their
turnovers in order to be suc
cessful against the Lady
Gamecocks’ defense.
“We knew we had to start
tonight before the SEC start
ed rolling,” sophomore for
ward said Christi Thomas.
“In order to win, we are going
to have to play hard every
night. We have to play hard

against a good team in order
to compete in the SEC.”
South Carolina’s balanced
offense will give the Lady
Bulldogs their most
formidable challenge thus far.
In their 79-64 win against
Mississippi State, the Lady
Gamecocks employed a bal
anced offensive attack to
improve their winning streak
to 10 games, with four play
ers scoring in double digits.
South Carolina’s offensive
leader, sophomore guard
Christina Ciocan, recently
has been on fire averaging
7.08 assists per game and
leading the squad in their
comeback against
Mississippi State.
“We stayed disciplined and
focused (against Morris
Brown),” coach Andy
Landers said. “We have sim
ple objectives: hustle, deflec
tions and rebounds. But they
got us beat against Michigan
State. There are things that
you do or you don’t. We have
to do a better job of that.
We’ll be ready on Thursday.”

make a living and be happy
at the same time,” she said.
Stremel began playing
guitar at age 12, at first fol
lowing along with her
father’s favorites, Johnny
Cash and Waylon Jennings.
Some of her classic coun
try roots still show through,
adding a southern twang to
her vocal style and remind
ing fans a little of Lucinda
Williams.
Before going solo, Stremel
was a member of Frogpond,
whose 1996 album “Count to
Ten” was produced by
Everclear’s lead-man Art
Alexakis.
Likewise, “All I Really
Want” was produced with
the help of Lou Whitney, a
big-name producer who is
always in high demand.
Life on the road is admit
tedly difficult, but she said
she feels like she is getting
closer to achieving her goals.
“We played last night in
St. Louis for the first time in
... three years,” Stremel said.
“It was just a great feeling.
I looked around and felt like
we were moving up the
ladder.”
