War criminals delivered to Guantanamo Bay
The first group of
U.S. detainees, made up of
Taliban and al-Qaeda
members, left an airport in
Kandahar, Afghanistan airport
Thurday for the U.S. naval base
in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba
According to CNN reports,
20 shackled and hooded
detainees were searched thor
oughly and then chained to the
seats of the jet.
The prisoners were consid
ered so dangerous, that mili
tary sources said officials con
sidered sedating them during
the flight.
Also on Thursday, officials
said all seven Marines aboard
the Marine Corps KC-130 refu
eling jet that crashed
Wednesday were killed.
Investigations currently
have yielded no bodies, said
Maj. Ralph Mills, a military
spokesman. Marine investiga
tors are travelling to the site,
he said.
Military officials still say
there is no indication the plane
was under enemy fire, but the
possibility has not been ruled
out.
“We’re going to do every
thing we can to find out what
caused the accident,” said 1st
Lt. John Jarvis, a military
spokesman in Kandahar.
The jet’s crash is the deadli
est incident for U.S. forces
since the United States began
bombing Afghanistan in
October.
“Our hearts and prayers go
out to the families of
the soldiers,” President
Bush said. “But I want to
remind them that the
cause that we
are now engaged in is just and
noble. The cause is freedom,
and this nation will not
rest until we’ve achieved our
objective.”

Recent education study calls University ‘unaffordable’
By JENNIFER MOORE
jmoore@randb.com
A recent study conducted by the Lumina
Foundation for Education deemed the University
“unaffordable” for low-income students.
But one University official said the results
shouldn’t discourage applicants.
“If they have the (academic) qualifications,
our financial aid people will find a way for them
to come here,” said Tom Jackson, associate vice
president for Public Affairs.
The study examined two-year and four-year
colleges and universities.
The study found that out of all American four-
year public colleges, only five state universities
were affordable for low-income students -
Alaska, Arkansas, Hawaii, Kentucky and
Wyoming.
The rating of “unaffordable” means many stu
dents attend at serious financial inconvenience
or sacrifice if they attend at all, according to
the group’s Web site (http-y/www.luminafounda-
tion.org).
The University is classified as “affordable” for
dependent median-income students, “affordable
with loans” for independent median-income stu
dents and “unaffordable” to dependent and inde
pendent low-income students, according to the
study.
Holly Rekow, a sophomore from Alpharetta,
said she doesn’t believe people think of the
University as “really expensive.”
“But,” she said, “I think it might scare people
if they read (the survey).”
The Office of Financial Aid offers grants,
loans, Federal Work- Study and a limited number
of scholarships to help students defray expenses,
according to (http://www.uga.edu/osfa).
“You can get through school, and a lot of folks
are doing it,” Jackson said. ‘Yes, it’s harder for
some, but college is not an entitlement. Nobody
should avoid the University of Georgia for lack of
money.”
