Ruff Ryders music could make America ‘Faint’
© CD REVIEW ©
Various Artists
“Bands for America”
Grade: D
Remember “We Are
The World” from back in
’84? Remember how cool it
was to have so many
different and diverse artists
come together for one
cause?
Take that image in your
mind of Cindy Lauper, Bob
Dylan, Michael Jackson and
Bruce Springsteen. Then
make one alteration to your
memory.
Imagine each and every
one of them looking and
sounding like Dave
Matthews.
The most recent in a long
line of tribute albums in
response to the Sept. 11 ter
rorist attacks is “Bands For
America.”
This compilation album
features 17 bands each per
forming live, original compo
sitions on this 70-minute
album.
The proceeds from the
album’s sales are all going to
the United Way.
Some of the more visible
(and best) bands on this
CD are The String Cheese
Incident, o.a.r. and
Virginia Coalition. All of
whom have had many shows
over the past few years in
Athens.
What is the most bareable
track on this CD you ask?
Honestly, it all sounds the
same. Some bands will, of
course, stick out depending
on your taste of jam-groove
music.
For those not into the
Dave Matthews school of
thought (all 10 of you on
campus) this album may not
be such a wise purchase.
You could just listen to
the decent tracks (two, three
and eight) and take comfort
in the fact your money is
going to something good.

The Faint
“Danse Macabre”
Grade: B+
Music genres are like
wine: let them age and they
get better. The ’80s are no
exception.
The Faint picked up on
this concept, taking the ’80s
into the new millennium
with a whole new vibe.
On the band’s latest
release, “Danse Macabre,”
fuses “danse” with a slightly
gothic mentality, making for
a sickly sweet album.
With a penchant for the
inescapable 4/4 time signa
ture of dance beats, The
Faint manage to leave
you wanting more after
only 35 minutes and nine
songs.
The main aspect that
sets The Faint apart from
other ’80s wanna-be’s is its
ability for incorporating pow
erful subtleties into its
music.
These subtleties, such as
the Vietnamese woman
dubbed into the beginning of
“Total Job,” and the sound of
a train passing in “Violent,”
enhance the entire experi
ence of the album.
The CD gets started with
a pounding first song called
“Agenda Suicide.”
Intense dance beats com
bine with Atari noises to give
the song a feel verging on
math rock.
The Faint also tackles the
lack of identity caused by
materialism, weaving a pow
erful statement into the
seemingly upbeat dance feel.
Lines like “the drones
work hard before they die,”
and “all we want are just
pretty little homes,” reveal
a cynical nature prevalent
throughout the entire
album.
Song eight, “Violent,” has
received its fair share of air
time on 90.5 and rightly so.
This song is hands down the
best song on the album.
From the violent drum
break in the middle of the
song (corresponding nicely
with the name) to the sound
of a train quietly passing
(corresponding nicely with
the lyrics), this song is sheer
genius — and it’s danceable
too!
“Ballad of a Paralyzed
Citizen” ends the CD on a
very low note.
After hearing eight tracks
of pure boisterous dance
music, this song is an unwel
comed drain.
Creeping along drearily,
the lyrics are the only bear
able part of the song. In the
end, this song sounds too
much like Vast and not
enough like The Faint.
Regardless of this last
song, the album is full of
infectious beats and intense
new sounds that will make
even a Georgia Tech
student want to get up and
dance.
One word of advice to
those who buy this album —
listen to it often and listen to
it LOUD!
— Kyle Wehrend
Ruff Ryders (various artists)
“Ryde or Die Vol. Ill - In
the ‘R’ We Trust”
Grade: C
Riding the waves of two
previously successful compi
lations, the Ruff Ryders
camp has released its newest
effort, “Ryde or Die Vol. Ill —
In The ‘R’ We Trust.”
Guest appearances
include Tha Eastsidaz,
Ludacris, Petey Pablo and
Bubba Sparxxx, among oth
ers.
One characteristic lacking
from this effort, however, is
the presence of serious lyri
cal quality.
The album is, however, a
good mix of experience and
fresh, new talent and energy.
One thing that remains
constant from the previous
compilations is a slew of
high-octane, power-packed
beats that are sure to please

hip-hop fans.
Fueled by production vet
erans Swizz Beatz and
Timbal and, among others,
Vol. Ill consistently delivers
various head-bobbing
sounds that are sure to
quench your thirst for the
best beats. The duo does a
great job at varying tempo
and style.
The first track, “Dirrty,”
does nothing more than
disappoint listeners as North
Carolina’s own Petey Pablo
and Drag-On make
a vain attempt to spit
fire to a less-than-average
beat.
The second track follows
the trend of pairing a north
ern and southern artist, as
the L.O.X.’s frontman
Jadakiss hooks up with his
country counterpart Bubba
Sparxxx to beat out an
impressive one-two punch in
“They Ain’t Ready.”
Newcomers Infa-Red,
Cross and Aja of the Ruff
Ryder camp combine their
efforts in “Gonna Be
Sumthin.” The song shows
the trio’s inexperience, as
they come up with an incred
ibly anemic and boring out
put.
Ruff Ryders workhorse
DMX lends his usual high-
energy and strained, yet
powerful, voice to “Friend of
Mine.” Though famous for
his often blatantly offensive
lyrics, X comes through with
one of the album’s most cre
ative cuts.
The album makes you
think you will get a perfor
mance similar to those of
the group’s earlier record
ings, but, in the end, their
efforts fall short and unin
spired.
“Ryde or Die Vol. Ill”
could be the Ruff Ryders’
worst effort yet. The beats
may be the only thing that
make it as good as it is —
average.
