Sheppard trying to draw a crowd
By NICOLE CIOMEK
nciomek@randb.com
Nathan Sheppard proba
bly will never reach the popu
larity of Janies Taylor or Bob
Dylan, but his career as an
Athens musician has given
him a chance to play the
music that he loves.
Sheppard, a Savannah
native, was a late bloomer
into the world of music.
Although he has loved to
sing since he was just a tod
dler, Sheppard never picked
up a guitar until after high
school.
He moved to Athens at
age 19 to attend the
University but found it was
not for him.
“It was just a waste of
time and money for me,”
Sheppard said.
Keeping Athens as his
home, Sheppard was playing
local clubs by the age of 23,
eventually working up to tour
the South. Sheppard does
not think of his music as
modem, but rather “a
folk/pop sound that is rooted
in anything from the ’70s.”
This is due in part to his
major musical influences
being such folk/pop artists
from the ’70s such as Neil
Young, Donovan and Paul
Simon.
Sheppard’s goals for his
live show are to represent
what he does. His sets
include mainly original songs
which he writes about any
thing that inspires him, from
love to politics to a little dog
on the street.

Sheppard has become a
fixture in the Athens music
scene, a scene he now sees
fading out.
“I see so many good bands
leave because of lack of inter
est,” Sheppard said. “The
quality of the music gets bet
ter and crowds get smaller.”
Despite his feelings about
the music scene in Athens, he
continues to play at DT’s reg
ularly and release albums.
Now on Lost Cat Records,
Sheppard has re-released

MOVIE REVIEW
By CHRIS HASSIOTIS
chassioti@randb.com
At a time when downed
Black Hawks muscle their
way into the multiplex and
the boxers punch their way
onscreen, other stories take a
quieter route.
But don’t let the muted
tone of “In the Bedroom” fool
you — emotional devastation
need not be loud, and mov
ing stories need not be obvi
ous. This is a film captivating
in its humanity, powerful and
tender — but never overbear
ing or saccharine — at the
same time.
Set in a quiet Maine fish
ing town, the film focuses on
the tragic events of one sum
mer and the ramifications of
passion and anger.
The movie’s opening scene
introduces Frank (Nick
Stahl) and Natalie (Marisa
Tomei), a couple very much
in the fresh stages of love.
He’s a college student home
for the summer; she’s a
woman dealing with her
estranged husband Richard
(a suitably vicious William
Mapother).
Frank and Natalie are the
focus of the early part of the
film: how they deal with her
two sons, how they handle
confrontations with Richard,
their relationship with

Grade: A-
Lowdown: Subtle and understat
ed, moving and intelligent, this
film about a family rocked by
tragedy is fueled by strong char
acter-driven performances.
Frank’s parents — which is
as subtle and as complex as
any in the movie.
Whether it’s the politics of
a backyard barbecue or the
question of the age difference
between Frank and Natalie,
the first act of “In the
Bedroom” carries a verity of
everyday life.
Then things change.
Director Todd Field intro
duces events that shock the
audience as much as they
shock the characters, though
the film maintains its tone of
real-life people dealing with
real-life issues.
And when things get to
the point where the movie
could turn into a Lifetime
sobfest, “In the Bedroom”
instead shines with its varied
portrayals of how people deal
with grief.
No longer the story of
Frank and Natalie, the film’s
focus shifts to Matt and Ruth
Fowler, Frank’s parents.
Played dead-on by Tom
Wilkinson and Sissy Spacek,
these are characters who try
to deal with their changed
lives the only ways they know
how.
Matt’s problem is he
doesn’t know what to do:
He’s an Ivy League-educated
doctor with a successful
practice and a happy life, but
has no idea what actions to
take. However, Ruth, a music
teacher used to orchestrating
all aspects of her home life,
doesn’t know how to feel.
In its honesty, “In the
Bedroom” paints a brutally
compelling picture of grief in
the real world; while emo
tions may rise and issues
must be addressed, doorbells
still ring and people still eat
lunch.
Not all details find their
way to the audience — it’s
never explained why Natalie
left her husband, and the
motivations and intentions of
many characters are left
vague and open to audience
interpretation.
Affectingly, emotionally
candid, “In the Bedroom”
carries performances by
Wilkinson, Spacek and Tomei
that are unparalleled — while
the loud movies may get all
the box-office attention, this
quiet one deserves, for what
it’s worth, that of the awards.
entitled “Traveling On.” He
also has another album com
ing out this week called,
“Ordinary People,” which is
another compilation of previ
ously recorded songs.
Sheppard is recording a
new album that should be
released in the next few
months.
His goal for the future is to
release as many albums as
possible and with his endless
supply of songs, it should not
be difficult for him.
“I am not trying to sell a
million records,” Sheppard
said. “I just want to have a
good time.”
