Startup gives Bulldogs relief
By CHRIS BIGNON

Will Startup wasn’t the
starting pitcher for Georgia
against William & Mary on
Wednesday — but he sure
pitched like it.
Starting pitcher Michael
Hyle surrendered four runs in
his only inning of work before
Georgia head coach David
Pemo decided to go with
Startup out of the bullpen.
Startup, a freshman from
Cartersville, responded by
keeping the Tribe at bay the
rest of the day, scattering four
hits and one run over 7.1
innings to lead Georgia (7-4)
to a 6-5 victory over William &
Mary (8-4) before 1,160 at
Foley Field.
“I do kind of like coming
out of the bullpen,” Startup
said. “You’ve got no time to
think — you get out there and
it is time to go.”
The Bulldogs nibbled into
the lead with two runs in the
second inning when Clint
Sammons singled with the
bases loaded, making it
a 4-2 William & Mary
advantage.
College of Charleston
transfer Jasha Balcom, who
got his second start of the
season in left field, cut the
Tribe’s lead to 4-3 in the third
inning when he singled, stole
second and advanced to third
on a fielder’s choice, before
scoring on a wild pitch by
William & Mary starting
pitcher Phil Bartleski.
Balcom fueled an 11-hit

Clint Sammons went 3-for-4
with 2 RBIs.
“We try to give him as
many (at bats) as we can,”
Pemo said of Balcom, who hit
.324 as a two-year starter at
Charleston.
The Bulldog’s hottest hit
ter, Jon Armitage, doubled
down the right field line to
begin the fourth, and Justin
Holmes drove him in with a
single to tie it at four and
chase William & Mary’s
starter.
Georgia scored the go-
ahead mn in the fifth when
Armitage had an RBI bunt
single with the bases loaded
to make the score 5-4 in favor
of Georgia.
Catcher Clint Sammons
got the Bulldogs the eventual
winning mn in the sixth when
he singled sharply up the mid
dle, scoring on a wild pitch by
Joe Roenker to give Georgia a
6-4 lead.
Startup was touched for
his only run in the ninth when
he surrendered a towering
solo home mn to Mike
DeCarlo, which trimmed the
Georgia lead to one.
“I really wanted to finish
the game,” Startup said. “I tip
my hat to the guy that hit that
home mn. I don’t know if it
has landed yet.”
