Rutgers plans walkout
By DEEPIKA RAO
drao@randb.com
The idea of a student-
organized walkout to
protest legislative budget
cuts is met with mixed
emotions on the University
campus.
At Rutgers University in
New Brunswick, N.J., the
administration is support
ing a student walkout and
protest today at the state
capital in opposition to
impending budget cuts for
next year.
Mark Maben, assistant
director of special projects
and executive support in
Rutgers’ media relations,
said student involvement is
essential because the conse
quences of such a large
budget cut have the poten
tial to hurt instruction at
the university.
“These are simply
unprecedented budget cuts
in the history of Rutgers
University and the state,” he
said. “There is no way the
cuts can be absorbed with
out a devastating impact on
the quality of education
here at Rutgers.”
In Athens,an order to
accommodate the budget
cuts at the University,
officials will have to cut $3.5
million for graduate assis
tant funding and leave 340
faculty and 425 support staff
positions unfilled, said Ryan
Nesbit, associate vice
president and budget
director.
Vice President of Student
Affairs Richard Mullendore
said the $44 million budget
cut in state appropriations
proposed for the next fiscal
year could lead to a decline
in the quality of instruction
at the University.
“The University had
incredibly upward momen
tum, and I would hate to see
that momentum stifled,”
Mullendore said.
He said he would not sup
port a student walkout
because legislators already
are in a tough
situation.
“I would certainly never
advocate for demonstra
tions or anything that would
put legislators in a more dif
ficult position,” he said.
However, he said student
concerns should not be
ignored as long as they
express their opinions in the
appropriate way.
“I know University
students are as concerned
about our budget as we are,”
he said. “Student voice is
incredibly important as long
as it is directed in a positive
way.”
Nesbit said student
correspondence with legisla
tors can be influential in
mitigating the severity of
budget cuts.
“Anything students can
do to communicate to local
legislators and demonstrate
how much it means to be at
a top 20 public university
(would be effective),” he
said.
Brian Murray, a senior
from Athens and president
of the Young Democrats,
said a walkout would be
appropriate if budget cuts
go through.
“If serious cuts do go
through that affect our
instruction, then a walkout
would definitely be in order,”
he said.

Students take first place
By LUCAS KLAUSS

Three University business
students’ hard work recently
paid off to the tune of $10,000.
MBA candidates Ken
Kaufman, Jeff Mullins and
Tina Manwiller placed first at
Indiana University’s “Spirit of
Enterprise” contest Feb. 21.
Their proposed business
plan, Carepoint Professional
Employees, is a venture that
will provide small medical clin
ics and doctor’s offices with
payroll and personnel
assistance, among other
health care-related services.
Kaufman, an MBA student
from Upland, Calif., attributed
the group’s success to its
polished presentation and
Carepoint’s combination of
low risk and high potential.
Kaufman said he was
originally drawn to the health
care industry because it “has
growth but is also stable.”
Integral to the team’s
achievement in Indiana was
the assistance of management
professor Charles Hofer.
Hofer said he is very
pleased with the Carepoint
team and has high hopes.
In May, the team will
compete in the International
MOOT CORP Challenge at
the University of Texas.
Hofer said he believes the
team may finish in the top
three teams and could even
take first place.
Kaufman also said he
thinks the team has “great
chances” in May.
Hofer said Carepoint may
even become a reality “by the
time the students graduate
in May.”
