Sun Microsystems provides
free software for University
By ABIGAIL SMITH
asmith@randb.com
Free stuff is cool.
And some University departments are
going to be getting things for free they once
had to pay for.
Sun Microsystems has announced it will
no longer charge students and professors
for almost 100 different software products
— including programming tools —
although administrators still must pay the
licensing fees.
The change stems from the growing
base of Linux users, a free, open-source
operating system with its own program
ming tools.
The Computer Science department
maintains about 100 Sun stations, said Ken
Powell, systems manager for the depart
ment, a major Sun user on campus.
“Sun has always been competitive in
their pricing. They are doing everything
they can to keep Linux off the desktop,” he
said.
“As an IT manager, this is where some of
the college guys don’t understand that
there is a professionalism that you have to
maintain,” he said. “I’m trying to guarantee
robustness and stability.”
Linux users like Linux because of the
quality and because it is free, said Piotr
Misztal, head of the University Linux users
group, Chugalug.
“With Linux, I am not encumbered by
someone else’s idea of what I need,” he
said. “If I want to change something, I can.”
Because several Sun products used by
the Computer Science department already
are acquired at little to no cost for educa
tion, the additional free software will prob
ably only save the Computer Science
department about $3,000 a year, Powell
said.
But some free software that is offered
has been used instead of purchasing Sun
products in the past, said Chris Kochut,
Computer Science department head.
Since those Sun products now will be
available at no charge, there may be future
changes in what is used.
“There will be a wider variety of tools
available for students,” he said.
“It’s not how much it will save us,” he
said, “but a matter of being able to make
use of it or not.”

The College of Education
recently announced the induc
tion of three faculty members
into the International Adult and
Continuing Education (IACE)
Hall of Fame.
The faculty members —
Karen Watkins, Ronald Cervero,
and Sharan Merriam — are
being inducted today at the
University of Oklahoma at
Norman, Okla.
“It’s a real honor to be
inducted. It is based on contri
butions I made and recognizes
what I have been doing for 20
years,” said Merriam, a member
of the Senior Teaching Fellows
program and the University
Teaching Academy.
She has published 20 books
in her field, has taught work
shops and seminars on adult
learning and has conducted
research around the world.
Merriam said she is most
proud of her ability to be a good
mentor to students and junior
colleagues.
