Students wig out
for Locks of Love
By JACKIE KRAWCZYK

With warm weather just
around the corner, some
students may be considering
a shorter haircut to go along
with the rising temperatures.
Instead of just having
those tendrils swept up from
the salon floor only to end up
in the trash, there is an organ
ization that wants that hair.
Locks of Love, a nonprofit
organization that provides
wigs for children with medical
hair loss, receives ongoing
donations from the Athens
area.
Hair Solutions, a salon on
Hawthorne Avenue, has been
working with the organization
for about six years.
“You can’t find children’s
sized wigs; that is why Locks
of Love is so important,” said
Sue Heide, owner of the
salon.
Most of the children who
receive wigs from Locks of
Love suffer from an auto
immune condition called
alopecia areata, which causes
baldness.
Other children receive
wigs due to hair loss caused
by burns or radiation
treatment.
The wigs made by Locks of
Love are custom-made and
suction fitted so children can
swim, play sports and do just
about anything, Heide said.
Renee Leverette, from
Stone Mountain, donated 11
inches of her hair to the
Locks of Love organization
Friday at the Hair Solutions
Salon in Athens.
“I wanted to get my hair
cut, and someone mentioned
donating it. It touched my
heart — what a great way to
give a gift,” she said.
Leverette, who brought a
friend with her for support,
was slightly nervous about
how her hair would look
short.
“I have been thinking
about this for months. I had
to get up the nerve to do it,”
she said.
Jennifer Johnson, a stylist
at Hair Solutions, said,
“(Donating) is the catalyst to
give them the nerve to cut
their hair — and then they

love it.”
When asked how people
react while donating their
hair, Johnson said, “They are
thrilled. One girl started
hyperventilating, though.”
She said most of the
donors are college students.
“Donors come in at least
once a week, sometimes as
many as five in one week,”
Johnson said.
Donating several inches of
hair is not something just
females do.
“Men with long hair usual
ly have absolutely beautiful
hair to donate,” Heide said.
She said she believes that
when someone comes in to
donate their hair, “it is always
much more than just a
haircut.”
Loafing around at Panera Bread
Vast menu full of
many fresh tastes

Where does one find great food, a
soothing environment and friendly,
helpful faces with cheerful names like
Mona and Renee all in one place?
No, not Disneyland.
It’s Panera Bread, and there’s now
one in Athens, located at 3151 Atlanta
Highway. Sure, it’s a bit of a drive, but
it’s worth it.
I went there for dinner earlier this
week and found a nearly full parking
lot.
Automatically, I knew I was in the
right place.
I went inside and was awed by the
selection. Panera has everything from
bagels to baguettes, Tuscan chicken to
tuna salad, Asian sesame chicken salad
to, well, chicken noodle soup.
I had no idea how to choose
because, frankly, every menu item
looked more appetizing than the last,
even the ones I couldn’t pronounce.
But where else am I going to get to
learn what a hot panini sandwich or a
focaccia bread is?
“The thing about us is we have so
many choices, you can just keep com
ing back and coming back and always
try something new,” said Eddie Khalili,
a manager at Panera.
For those with an appetite for foods
that involve chipolte mayonnaise or
spinach-artichoke spread, Panera is
PUB If GRUB
definitely the place to go.
For those, like myself, who have no
idea what all that is, it’s an even better
meal.
What I finally settled on was a You
Pick Two, from which customers get
two of the following: a bowl of soup, a
half sandwich or a half salad.
I picked three.
Beginning with a fandango salad
(mixed greens, toasted walnuts, gor-
gonzola cheese, Mandarin orange slices
and fat-free raspberry vinaigrette), I
moved onto the broccoli Cheddar soup
and from there to an Asiago roast beef
sandwich.
I was eating light, so I decided not
to finish the salad.
I had to finish the sandwich,
though, as it was a signature sandwich.
“Every quarter, we switch out our
theme,” Khalili said. “This quarter, our
theme is Asiago.”
As for the soups, they rotate daily
among selections including French
onion, baked potato and vegetarian
black bean. There are five soups per
day, so, needless to say, my choices
weren’t lacking.
After dinner, the bakery offers multi
grain, sourdough and sesame semolina,
and they’re all baked fresh daily.
“We donate anything left over to the
Northeast Georgia Foodbank,” Khalili
said. “We have just about everything
under the sun you can imagine —

breads, cookies, brownies.”
Not the least of these are the cinna
mon raisin loaf, chocolate cream
cheese brownies and pumpkin muffins.
I know. I had my suspicions too, but
the word “delectable” comes to mind
afterward.
Want to wash it all down?
That’s no problem because Panera
also is a coffee shop, and guess what?
The selection is enormous.
Basically, the thing to remember is
that for any type of hunger, Panera’s
got a solution — and they’re all so
good.
