‘Wanderlust’ goes global
By RYAN LYNN RAY
For The Red & Black
With “Gerhard Reinke’s
Wanderlust,” which pre
mieres at 11:30 p.m.
Saturday, Comedy Central
enters the crowded genre of
travel shows.
“Wanderlust” is a very
well-written and well-execut
ed travel show that captures
the irreverent comedic
style made popular by the
network.
This humorous approach
to exploring the world helps
set “Wanderlust” apart from
other ordinary travel shows.
Josh Gardner displays
excellent comedic skill as the
enigmatic and clever
German host, Gerhard
Reinke, who gets into more
trouble than Chevy Chase on
vacation.
The first episode begins
with an expedition to the
crown jewel of Southeast
Asia — Thailand.
In his travels, Reinke finds
many interesting aspects of
Thai culture to poke fun at,
including people eating bugs
and tricycle-riding elephants.
It’s when Reinke makes
fun of himself, however,
that the show truly becomes
hilarious.
In Bangkok, Reinke
receives a backbreaking
traditional Thai massage,
gets pummeled by a teenag
er in a Mui Thai kickboxing
match and endures the
embarrassment of not being
able to urinate because of
the Thai tradition of mas
sages by bathroom valets
when one uses the urinal.
The shame of “pee shy
ness” haunts Reinke
throughout the show as he
searches for answers to
help cure his debilitating

problem. Reinke turns to
Buddhism, a religion prac
ticed by 95 percent of
Thailand’s population, to try
and gain an understanding of
his urinary difficulties.
This search leads to a
hilarious reenactment of the
life of the Buddha and an
expedition to the Big
Buddha Temple in Koh
Samui.
Also, he visits the island
of Koh Pi Pi, but the island’s
name only makes him
more ashamed of his failure
to urinate.
The host eventually finds
a cure for his terrible condi
tion through the power of
the wild Rill Moon Party in
Koh Pha-Ngan.
The trip to Thailand
culminates with Reinke
finally relieving himself on
the beach in front of thou
sands of cheering onlookers.
In the next episode,
he travels to the majestic
Andes Mountains of Bolivia
and Peru.
A horrible case of altitude
sickness interferes with his
ability to host the show
when he visits the Bolivian
capitol, La Paz, which is
located 14,000 feet above sea
level.
He finds a cure through
chewing cocoa leaves, but
the cure turns out to be
worse than the disease, as
he becomes addicted to
the cocoa.
In order to attain more
cocoa, he wanders the
Bolivian countryside in a
mad attempt to find the
addictive leaves.
He finds cocoa in a field in
Pisorga, but as he eats it,

he is captured by a Marxist
guerrilla group known as the
RU.B.E.
The name of the group
creates a funny running joke
that pervades the entire
show.
Reinke’s stint as a prison
er of the RU.B.E. is one of
the funniest scenes in recent
television history, and it is
through this scene that
the writers of “Wanderlust”
really show their immense
comedic talent.
In the end, Reinke finds
salvation from his addiction
in the ancient sacred ruins of
Machu Picchu.
Gerhard Reinke is a
hilarious character, and his
show will be a very nice
addition to Comedy
Central’s program lineup.

Thick Soled Shoes mix
garage, jam band sound
By GEOFF SANDELS
For The Red & Black
Thick Soled Shoes began,
as most bands did, in a
garage. But some people
still want to make it out to
be a jam band.
Yet guitarist Pat Rusert is
quick to put out that fire.
“A lot of people like to
pigeonhole us as a jam band,
but we are not,” he said.
Then what is Thick Soled
Shoes?
“Just straight ahead
rockin’,” Rusert joked.
The band began playing
in 1998 and includes
singer/guitarist Jeremy Joel,
Alan Mabry on keyboards,
Ed Williams on bass,
Marshall Hudson on drums
and Rusert playing lead
guitar.
Thick Soled Shoes will be
bringing its garage rock
brigade to Last Call Friday.
The show will start at about
10:30 p.m. and is free for
the over 21 crowd. There will
be a $5 cover for anyone
under 21.
The band is planning to
record a full-length album
this spring, and it should be

available sometime this
summer.
They have recorded a
demo at the A Room, but
it’s pretty difficult to find.
The demo was co
produced by the band with
Wes MacDonald.
But what will the album
sound like? Garage or jam
music?
Rusert insists that, along
with Williams, he is a huge
hair metal fan.
Rusert saw his first
concert on Bon Jovi’s
“New Jersey” Tour.
Any chance of cover
songs?
“We might tackle a couple
of covers, but the material
will probably mostly be
original material,” Rusert
said.
One new song, “Court
Marshall,” features a hint of
George Lynch, Dokken’s
famed guitarist.
Don’t expect the band to
jam for an obscene amount
of time, though.
“If any of our songs last
over eight minutes, I start
getting angry. And you can
tell,” Rusert said. “I am
not really a fan of songs over
10 minutes.”
So the Thick Soled
Shoes aren’t a jam band
after all.
Even Rusert couldn’t
adequately say what kind
of band it is.
Luckily, Mabry managed
to originally define the band.
“We are the music
equivalent of Michael Vick,”
he said.
Certainly, those are lofty
expectations, but the band
stands by Williams’ words.
What more could the
people of the No. 1 college
music town in America ask
for? A free show on a Friday
night in a bar is about as
good as it gets.
The band does have
some shoes to fill with its
unwavering bravado, and
the members affirm they
please all.
Maybe even Michael Vick.
