Fraternity hosts p.j. party for charity
By ERIN CAMP
For The Red & Black
Pajama parties may bring
to mind 10-year-old girls in
fluffy pink pajamas eating junk
food late into the night while
watching “Grease.”
Think again — the Zeta Pi
chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha
Fraternity Inc. is hosting its
17th annual fund-raiser, a paja
ma party, this Saturday.
The pajama party, also
known as PJ2K3, is proclaimed
by Zeta Pi as being “The
South’s No. 1 pajama party.” It
is a non-alcoholic dance
party/fund-raiser.
The party will benefit the
March of Dimes, and some of
the money will go towards a
Martin Luther King Jr. monu
ment the fraternity would like
to build in Atlanta, said
Michael Patrick, a senior from
Peachtree City and president
of the University’s Zeta Pi
chapter.
“PJ2K3 will be a non
alcoholic alternative to going
downtown,” said Leon Hall, a
senior from Sommerville and a
member of Zeta Pi. “We just
want to create a comfortable
environment for people to
come and have some fun.”
The pajama party originally
was held in the Georgia Hall of
the Tate Student Center. It
grew so large that it had to be
moved to Stegeman Coliseum.
“The parties usually bring
college students from all
around the U.S. People have
flown in from as far away as
California and New York to
attend this party,” Patrick said.
A mishap with the police
last year shut down the party,
said Daniel Carnegie, a senior
from Douglasville.
“Some underage kids were
caught trying to sneak past
security to get in. The police
had to come shut us down,”
Carnegie said.
Due to the size of the
expected crowd and fire safety
codes, police are allowing omly
1,800 people to attend PJ2K3.
DJ Unstable from South
Carolina will be spinning music
beginning at 9 p.m.
Tickets, which are $10 for
students and $12 for non
students, will be sold at the
cashier’s window in the Tate
Center, which is open from
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday
through Friday or by calling
542-8074.
Director’s vision
intrigues many
By RYAN SIEVEKING

Director David Lynch is a
hit-and-miss Hollywood
insider. Critics have been fasci
nated by the psychological
nature of his work since the
release of 1976’s “Eraserhead,”
his first feature film.
His arthouse approach to
filmmaking, however, has
never been well received by
mainstream audiences.
Lynch does have a faithful
following of fans. Supporters
with an appetite for intellect
appreciate his eccentric flair.
His dysfunctional filmogra
phy ranges from “Dune,” an
adaptation of Frank Herbert’s
epic science fiction novel, to
2001’s “Mulholland Drive,” a
twisted psychological thriller
depicting dreamy reality.
David Lynch is considered
by some to be one of the most
creative and intriguing artists
in Hollywood.
But Lynch isn’t only
creative as a filmmaker.
He also is a painter, pho
tographer and sculptor — his
artwork has been displayed at
galleries in New York, Paris
and Tokyo. He designs furni
ture, composes soundscapes,
writes song lyrics and works
as a producer.
He is perhaps best known
for “Blue Velvet” — shown at
the Tate Student Center
Wednesday — a 1986 film
about the dark nuances of a
seemingly pleasant American
town.
“Blue Velvet” is a dark,
sensuous mystery involving
the intertwining lives of four
individuals.
Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle
MacLachlan) is a naive college
student with a penchant for
mysteries. Sandy Williams
(Laura Dem) is an innocent
woman who happens to be a
detective’s daughter and the
chief romantic interest.
Once events are set in
motion, the film’s narrative
spirals toward insanity.
Twisted renditions of Roy
Orbison’s “In Dreams” and
shameless advertisements of
Heineken abound as murder,
lust and rage take center
stage in such a jarring plot as
to bring into question the
film’s merit.
The movie stumbles
throughout several senseless
sequences, but there is an
abstract realism in “Blue
Velvet” that manages to evoke
a disturbing feeling.
Much like Lynch’s inconsis
tent resume, “Blue Velvet” is
hit and miss, loved by critics
and not so much by audiences
at large.
Lynch received a best
director Academy Award
nomination for “Blue Velvet.”
Last year, he reaped more
rewards, earning his second
nomination for “Mulholland
Drive.”
Yet, when all of Lynch’s
work is viewed in retrospect,
the question still remains — is
he a visionary auteur or a
flawed genius?
