VARIETY

Touring from town to town with
a “sound so sublime,” Santa Cruz-
based Sound Tribe Sector 9 takes
an unorthodox approach in writing
its music, to say the least.
“None of us reads or writes the
music for our shows in the tradi
tional sense,” said keyboardist
David Phipps. “We all started carry
ing pocket-sequencer drum
machines, and those became lap
tops, and the laptops became note
book (computers) — giving us a
medium where we can visualize our
music.”
In addition to the role computers
play in song composition, Phipps
said STS9 often incorporates its
technological savvy into the band’s
live performances.

“We’re using (the laptops and
notebooks) primarily to trigger
(audio) samples,” he said. “The
bass player (David Murphy) also
uses it as a synthesized bass instru
ment on songs like EB — kind of
like a keyboard bass.”
According to Phipps, STS9 fuses
a fluid diversity of musical styles
into its spacey improvisations,
drawing influence from genres such
as jungle, drum ‘n’ bass, funk,
techno, prog-rock, reggae, soul,
jazz/fusion, rock and hip-hop.
“It’s a night-by-night thing most
of the time,” Phipps said. “Some of
it comes about in sound check, or
someone may be working on writing
something which they haven’t
finished yet, so we’ll slip it into one
of our songs where we can explore
and develop it live.”
In order to augment its head
spinning instrumental grooves,
Phipps said the band travels with
an impressive high-tech light show.
“We carry four techno beams and
four studio beams,” he said.“The
studio beams are smaller and less
obtrusive than the techno beams,
but they do a lot more.”
The keyboardist further
explained that, in the past, the
band has attempted to incorporate
other media into its shows as well,
producing varied results.
“We’ve been really interested in

having our lighting and media tie
into the shows, where we experi
mented with projections,” Phipps
said. “They really weren’t much bet
ter than what you would see on a
screensaver, though, so we had to
put the whole projection thing on
hold until we could find someone
who had the time and talent to
approach it more artistically.”
STS9 will be “teleporting deep
into your mind” this weekend, with
a two-night stand tonight and
Saturday night at the Georgia
Theatre.
“I love living in San Francisco,
but I also love coming back to
Atlanta and Athens,” Phipps said.
“It’s going to be good to end the
whole thing there in Athens, too —
this weekend’s shows are the last
ones on our tour.”
Atlanta label signs two local groups
By KELLEY HIRT

Now that it’s common
knowledge that Rolling Stone
called Athens the No. 1 music
town in the country, it’s time
to find out why.
Two Sheds Records, a
music label based out of
Atlanta, has assembled a
showcase of bands, including
two from Athens.
Three bands signed on the
album — Fairbum Royals,
Heros Severum and Silent
Kids — will represent the label
at Caledonia Lounge Saturday
night starting at 10.
Additionally, one unaffiliated
band, Eyes to Space, will play.
Both Heros Severum and
Fairbum Royals are from
Athens.
John Graham, the owner of
the label, signs local musicians
of many different calibers and
styles.
Eric Friar, the lead vocalist
and guitarist for Heros
Severum, said, “There’s not a
band on the label that sounds
like us or another that sounds
like Fairbum Royals except
Fairbum Royals. He has bands
that are not even categorical.”
Friar said the band has
been touring the South, play
ing between eight and 10
shows per month, and the
members plan to extend the
tour to Chicago, New York
City and Boston next month.
Heros Severum has been
seen on the College Music
Journal (CMJ) ranked near
the 150 mark, he said.
“It’s respectable to break
the top 200,” he said. “But it’s
not taking the world by
storm.”
Eyes to Space has been
seen around No. 20, and Silent
Kids are ranked at No. 125, he
said.
Dustin Hudson, the drum
mer for Heros Severum, said
he has only been playing with
the band for about nine
months since the split of his
band Chinook.
“We stole him,” Friar said.
However, the drummer
Hudson replaced, Jeff
Cummings, will be playing this
show as a percussionist.
Matt Lisle, the guitarist for
Fairbum Royals, said the band
has been classified as “low-fi
rock.”
“I don’t really know what
that means,” he said. “Usually,
it means self-recorded. I don’t
know if that should be taken
as a good thing or not.”
Lisle said the band’s style
of music often is compared to
The Replacements but that he
wouldn’t consider them
an influence.
“None of us own their CD,
so I don’t know if it’s true,” he
said.
Lisle, a staff member of the
University’s financial aid
department, said the band
recently released its record,
“From a Window Way Above.”
“Our bassist quit one week
before we recorded the

DIGITAL VINYL CD-R™ FROM VERBATIM.’ IT LOOKS LIKE A RECOREL
A long time ago. before your parents were old. music came on vinyl discs
called ’’records'! They looked cool, But that’s about it. So we decided to
bring back the funky, old school look of a record and endow it with our
