Lady Dogs net two wins
By BENJAMIN EGGER
begger@randb.com
Georgia women’s tennis is
doing exactly what elite col
lege programs do — dominate
the competition.
The fifth-ranked Lady Dogs
improved to 9-1 (4-0 SEC) for
the season by whipping both
Alabama schools over the
weekend.
Auburn, currently No. 40 in
the nation, went down 7-0 on
its home courts Friday after
noon on the Plains.
The Lady Dogs won the
doubles point after losing it in
both matches last weekend,
then went on to take all six
singles matches, four in
straight sets.
Sunday, No. 32 Alabama
came to Athens, where
Georgia has won 53 of the last
54 at home.
Alabama (10-3, 2-2 SEC),
did a little better than their
Tiger counterparts, as they
were able to win one singles
match when senior Anne
Nguyen had to quit due to a
foot injury, and only lost 6-1.
It is not yet known how
much time the All-American
from Lancaster, Penn., will
have to miss, if any.
Other than Nguyen, who
was up 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 before
retiring, the Lady Dogs
had little trouble with
their opposition.
The doubles combination
of senior Lori Grey and junior
Agata Cioroch has yet to lose a
match this season.
“We’re playing really well
together,” Grey said after
Sunday’s win. “We’re definitely
communicating a lot
better.”
Grey and Cioroch contin
ued their impressive play into
singles.
One of the most decorated
performers in Georgia
women’s tennis history, Grey
has won her last 4 matches
since moving to outdoor play.
“I’m starting to hit the ball
better, plus we’re outdoors,”
the Seminole, Fla., native said.
“I like outdoor tennis better.
The courts are slower, and I
can set up better.”
Cioroch, who dropped to
No. 2 in the nation, in the lat
est Omni Hotels rankings, is
now 60-2 in team dual match
play, 33-2 in the No. 1 slot,
after defeating the Lady Tide’s
Millie Begovic 6-0, 6-1.
“I’ve played well this
season,” said Cioroch, a native
of Warsaw, Poland. “I’m trying
to play my game. I’m not
thinking about playing (the
opposition’s best).”
Newcomer Evgenia
Subbotina kept up her solid
rookie campaign with a pair of
weekend wins, as did junior

Short-handed Georgia falls
to Vandy in SEC tourney
By ARI WEITZ
aweitz@randb.com
Entering this season, the Lady Dogs knew
they would be shorthanded with only 10 active
players on their roster.
As the season progressed, the number
diminished, as sophomore forward Ebony
Felder has missed the majority of the season
after she partially tore the patella tendon in her
right knee in December, and more recently,
Kara Braxton was suspended for the remainder
of the season for violating team policy.
But the Lady Dogs hit another snag last
week, as freshman forward Marquita Driskell,
who assumed Braxton’s starting spot on the
floor, suffered a fainting spell in Wednesday’s
practice.
She returned to Athens from Little Rock,
Ark., on Thursday so additional testing could
be administered on an unspecified medical
problem.
That left only seven players available for the
SEC tournament.
After earning a first-round bye, the No. 17
Lady Dogs’ (19-11) valiant effort against No. 15
Vanderbilt (21-8) fell short on Friday as they
lost 74-70 in the second round of the
tournament.
It looked as if Georgia caught a break with
16:12 to go in the second half, as first-team All-
SEC center Chantelle Anderson picked up her
fourth foul for the Commodores.

While Anderson was watching from the
bench for the next 13:27, Georgia could not cap
italize off the opportunity, getting outscored
28-19 by the Commodores in that span.
When Anderson came back in with 2:45 to
go, she had an immediate impact, making three
quick shots, including a layup with 24.5 sec
onds to put the Commodores up by three
points.
Anderson, making the most out of her 17
minutes of playing time, then deflected Christi
Thomas’ three point attempt to tie the game
with ten seconds to go.
“We’ve dealt with adversity very, very well,
which is a moral victory, but it just stings to
lose these games when you play your heart
out,” said Georgia assistant coach Michael
Shafer.
However, the season is far from over for the
Lady Dogs, who will find out on Sunday which
other schools will be joining them in Athens for
the first and second rounds of the NCAA
tournament.
More importantly, the Lady Dogs will have
about two weeks to monitor the situations of
both Felder and Driskell, in hopes that they’ll
be back on the floor when Georgia hosts
its first round game on Saturday, March 22.
