REACTION: Players
visit Adams’ home
>■ From Page 1
“Apparently, Adams said
they were supposed to notify
the team about what was
going to happen. The team
didn’t hear about it from any
body from the University, the
team heard it from TV” the
employee added.
To find out anything about
the decision, the basketball
team had to go to Adams’ res
idence on Prince Avenue.
“He agreed to come out
and talk to us,” Wehunt said.
“It was professional but that
was the least he can do.”
“He told us, and I quote
this, ‘Sometimes you experi
ence victory together, some
times you suffer together,’” the
employee said. “He said,
‘Sometimes life just isn’t fair.’”
Reaction to Athletics
Director Vince Dooley and
Adams’ decision hit hard with
Wehunt, who said he has
dreamed of playing in the
NCAAs since he was a kid
missing school to watch the
first and second rounds.
“I was gonna get to play
this year,” he said. “I had been
promised by Coach to play in
the SEC tournament and the
NCAA. That’s been taken
away from me. I’m
devastated.”
The employee said every
one was shocked.
“It was a sense of disbelief,”
he said. “They fought for this
University.”
About the investigation,
the employee said, “For this to
be about a EE. class, that’s
just unbelievable. It all goes
back to the department not
following procedure.”
Both the employee and
Wehunt said the decision was
made much too quick —
before the investigation even
ended.
“We feel like we were put in
jail before the jury’s out,” the
employee said.
“I compare this to being
arrested and putting yourself
in prison before the jury finds
you guilty,” Wehunt said.
The future of several play
ers is now in doubt.
Junior Jarvis Hayes had
said he was staying at Georgia
for his senior year, but the
Atlanta Journal-Constitution
reported online Monday night
he was going pro.
The SEC and NCAA tour
nament were going to be a
place for senior guard Ezra
Williams and Hayes to play in
the spotlight, the employee
said.
“Jarvis and Ezra — this will
cost them money,” Wehunt
said.
Wehunt said that he wants
to coach basketball, but his
resume is now tainted.
“I won’t get into college
coaching,” he said. “This kills
my resume.”
Hayes was unavailable for
comment Monday night.
EFFECTS: Dogs face future obstacles
> From Page 1
On top of that, Chris Daniels and
Rashad Wright (who were both declared
ineligible for academic fraud yesterday)
are juniors.
Their future is now unknown, but next
year’s team, with or without Harrick at
the helm, would need them badly with
Ezra Williams going
and Jarvis Hayes presumably leaning
toward professionalism.
Technically, Harrick still has his job.
However, with the scrutiny Adams has
had to deal with, many assume it will only
be a matter of time before he cuts the
string on Harrick.
In addition, the NCAA may not be fin
ished yet. It’s likely that further punitive
actions will be brought against the
school.
Those in power may think these pun
ishments will ease the sting from the
NCAA since they are self-imposed by the
school, but the program isn’t safe from
further harm, including scholarship
reduction.
And this all couldn’t have come
at a worse time for Bulldog basketball,
when observing the success Harrick
has brought here in only four
years.
The month of March and its postsea
son basketball was beginning to bring to
Georgia athletics the same kind of buzz
that December and postseason football
had brought.
And it’s over, for now.
Georgia’s prominent athletic program
may have sacrificed the Harricks, but
what shall become of the future
of Georgia basketball? Only time will
tefi.
HARRICK: Improper benefits seal fate of team
>- From Page 1
The University’s actions
come on the heels of a
school, SEC and NCAA
investigation into the bas
ketball program stemming
from allegations from a for
mer player.
Tony Cole, who played
only 16 games for the
Bulldogs last season before
being released from the
team following allegations of
sexual assault, told ESPN on
Feb. 27 that Harrick Jr. com
mitted several NCAA viola
tions while recruiting Cole,
including:
• paying a $300 phone bill
for Cole
• paying at least $1,200
worth of hotel expenses
before Cole moved into his
dorm room
• doing correspondence
work for Cole before trans
ferring to the University
• giving Cole an ‘A’ in a
class that Harrick Jr. taught
and Cole says he didn’t
attend.
Harrick Jr. was suspend
ed with pay on Feb. 28. The
University said on March 5
that Harrick Jr. wouldn’t
have his contract renewed
when it ended on June 30.
Cole also said Harrick Sr.
had given him his credit card
to purchase a 28-inch TV
and that booster Mike
Young gave him as much as
$900 during his time at
Georgia.
